The Wheeler family will charm you with their friendly efficiency, gardens rolling down to Lough Swilly, rich rooms and fabulous food

Elegant, professional, ever-friendly – Rathmullan is impossible to fault. Despite (seamless) expansion the Wheelers work to maintain the warm feel that their parents created and there are so many lovely drawing rooms inside, such gorgeous grounds to roam outside, that numbers may only be evident at breakfast. Rathmullan already had its fine Georgian looks, its gardens that roll gently down to the shores of Lough Swilly and its comforting fires. Richly furnished bedrooms overlook the garden through superb tall windows onto balconies or little terraces and have big panelled bathrooms; the family rooms in the old house are veritable suites; there's even a room for your dog. The Wheeler's canopied restaurant, Cook & Gardener, is the backdrop to some wonderful food (local beers and pizzas from the wood-fired oven are a must!). Work up an appetite at tennis or croquet, in the indoor heated swimming pool or the steam room, stroll across the lawn and through the dunes to a long empty beach, sally forth to explore the rocky coves of the Fanad Peninsula or Rathmullan village: it has bags of seaside charm.
