The Experience

Matera’s cave dwellings have existed for thousands of years – but never quite like this!

Spread around three courtyards are 13 suites, each bathed in soft candlelight and each unique. Some have vaulted ceilings and beds in lofts; others, double showers carved into the rock. Stone floors and aircon cool you; fruits, linens and vintage pieces delight you. The place is steeped in ancient simplicity.

Start your day in a vaulted hall feasting on bruschetta, tartlets, Lucanian cheeses, and juices in crystal glasses. A glass floor reveals a remarkable network of cisterns below (an art gallery today) that your hosts will love to show you. Get lost in the labyrinth of the ‘sassi’; take a rest and view the city with a driver-guide in a mini ‘calessino’. Return to convivial drinks, chic armchairs and rustic tables in the courtyard, its paving stones polished with the passage of centuries.

We stayed 2 nights in this magical place in October. The exterior is the gray stone of ancient Matera, but inside are contemporary spaces worthy of a design magazine. The breakfast room is especially beautiful. Hospitality here is top notch. We were directed to very good restaurants nearby. Matera is unlike anywhere else I've ever visited. A good guide can unlock the complex history of the area, and staying in a cave hotel like this is special.

Ruth, Atlanta

A remarkable place which evokes the wonder and awe one experiences upon the first visit to enchanting Matera. Fernando and Marisa invite you to experience their vision, where utmost respect to an ancient heritage reveals itself in the careful attention given to the pure spaces of the stone cave rooms, given warmth with materials as wood, linen, vintage objects and light. Simply unforgettable.

The neighbourhood

You are in the heart of old Matera - Basilicata's jewel. Look up to the rock-spur churches and down to the Gravina canyon - and the Murgia National Park, a glory of prehistoric sites and wildlife. Step out the door for cafés, churches, museums, and cathedral. Of numerous trattorie, candlelit Ristorante Francesca comes highly recommended. The golden sands of Ginosa are a 45-minute drive.

Local points of interest from Fernando & Marisa Ponte

  • Casa Noha, renovated home, today headquarters of the local offices of the FAI, The national trust for Italy, is only a 10-minute walk
  • The rupestrian church off Madonna delle Virtù with the adjacent crypt of San Nicola dei Greci, where internationally renowned artists exhibits are organised is only 10 -minute walk
  • The Palombaro monumental cistern is only 10-minute walk.
  • Musma, Museum of Contemporary Sculpture – 7 min walk. Crypt of Original Sin 20 min by car
  • Natural Historic Archaeological Regional Park of the Rock Churches of the Matera region 15 minues by car
  • Some restarurant suggestions: Vitantonio Lombardo, Dimora Ulmo Ristorante Baccanti, Ristorante Francesca, Ristorante Abbondanza Lucana

Fernando & Marisa Ponte

Visionaries and pioneers from Matera, Fernando and Marisa were among the first, in the late 1980s, to buy into the historic centre once everyone had left. Their aim is to create a home from home - which happens spontaneously when guests gather in the courtyard for an evening glass of wine. Your hosts are always on hand to give precious advice, along with their warm professional staff.
