The
Experience

Linger over a breakfast of local cheeses, jams and Calabrian cake on the terrace and take in the sea air: not for nothing do the Italians call this the Coast of the Gods. The Aeolian Islands are in the distance and the sea is the brighest turquoise. You’ll feel at home in this relaxed place within walking distance of all the action. Amble down to the marina for private boat hire and explore the islands or hop on a ferry to Stramboli. A dramatic walk up to the Benedictine sanctuary on Santa Maria dell’Isola will reveal even more stunning views. There are two sandy beaches down steps or a zig zag path and the beaches all along the coast are worth exploring, some are good for windsurfing and all are worth staying at until sunset. Choose between plenty of restaurants serving seafood, local dishes and pizza – Calabrian food is not for those on a diet.

Location

The neighbourhood

Tropea is popular with Italian holiday makers in the summer and can get very busy. The old town has loads of character, with narrow lanes and hidden squares to explore, and plenty of restaurants serving the very rich Calabrian food. The 12th-century Norman cathedral has two undetonated WW2 bombs by the front door - it’s believed the town’s patron saint, Mary of Romania, protects the building. Boat trips to the Aeolian Islands depart from the marina, and there are several beaches nearby, some good for kite or windsurfing. You can also visit Santa Maria dell'Isola.

Local points of interest from Luca Giuliano

  • La Dolce Vita offers guests an amazing view on Santa Maria Dell'Isola. This is the first point of interest of Tropea to visit. An ancient church built on a island more than 1000 years ago.
  • This building was where most of the famous artists and actors of Italy stayed in the '50s
  • La Dolce Vita is in the heart of Tropea. Near La Dolce Vita you will find restaurants, shops and night life.

Introducing

Luca Giuliano

The Swiss/Tropea couple who own Villa Paola also own three other hotels in the area (including the Dolce Vita). They come and go, mostly in the summer months, and have put marketing and administration in the hands of their son Luca. Take advice from the warm and discreet local staff – if you’re going to explore this wild area of Calabria you will need their best tips.
