The Experience

Start the day with breakfast delivered to your suite; finish it with supper at the taverna. Almost all the produce comes from the valley below, such is the spirit of this exceptional place.

Six apartments of various sizes are scattered throughout Picinisco – hence the title ‘albergo diffuso’. Cesidio, his enthusiasm infectious, is a member of a modern movement, to restore abandoned villages across Italy. Glory in the views from the terrace as the children play in the garden below. Learn to make pasta and pizza in the kitchen of I Ciacca, the albergo’s brand new farm.

You can hop in the car for adventures in the National Park where bears, lynx and wolves still roam. Picnic, hike and enjoy the views as you puff your way up Prati di Mezzo; in winter, snowboard and cross-country ski. The scenery is glorious.

Reviews

My day at Sotto Le Stelle Picinisco was memorable. Cesidio Di Ciacca's enthusiasm for his project is contagious ! He showed me around, explained every detail of his plan with the albergo diffuso and the farm, introduced me to all his staff, from the concierge, to the farmers and workers ! I loved it and would highly recommend it to friends and guests looking for a really unique experience !

Location

The neighbourhood

Here, in the National Park of Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise, hiking paths abound. Visit the small tourist office in the village, and consider hiring a specialist guide. Further afield, visit the enchanting village of Civitella Alfedena where deer wander the streets; it's a winding 90-minute drive. Stop off half way in little San Donato (29km) whose ornate Catholic church is worth a detour. Further afield are Naples and the coast - a two-hour drive.

Local points of interest from Cesidio Di Ciacca

  • Picinisco is one of the main entrances to the Parco Nazionale d'Abruzzo Lazio e Molise (1 of the 5 best in Europe according to Lonely Planet in 2011). The village sits at 730m and has fabulous views over Val di Comino and over the Park.
  • We can organise guided walks, mountain bike rides or horse trails in the Park. Visit the modern Basilica of Canneto (first mentioned as a pilgrimage in 819 AD). Or walk to Monte Meta (2,242m) and on a clear day see both the Tyrhennian and Adriatic Seas.
  • We are less than 20 miles from the world famous Abbey of Montecassino, destroyed during WW2 and rebuilt to the original design. A stunning reconstruction made real through the eyes of your private guide, organised by our Concierge.
  • Picinisco lies half way between Rome and Naples. Use Sotto Le Stelle as a base to visit the ancient port of Gaeta, or the Palace of Caserta and silkworks at San Leucio or discover lost artworks at Nola or Anagni.
  • Take a day trip to see the 1,000 year old bell factory of Maranelli at Agnone to visit their museum and learn the science and art of bell making and on the way visit the Samnite ruins nearby.
  • Learn about local foods - visit cheese makers, butchers who make their own salumi, an ancient water mill which grinds flour, or forage for wild herbs, mushrooms and truffles. Visit Cantina I Ciacca to taste our own organic wine, EVOO, liqueurs and honey.

Introducing

Cesidio Di Ciacca

The owner Cesidio was born in Scotland; his family came from Picinisco and migrated years ago. Now he and many others are returning. After a career in law, Cesidio’s dream was to create a sustainable farm and an ‘albergo diffuso’. He has created employment and is respected in the village. His love for this land is infectious and he is aided by daughter Sofia and Marica, the farm manager.
