A short drive from Rome on the ancient Roman road, beyond towering cypresses and pines, is a stately villa built in 1889, surrounded by gardens of lavender and roses. The Lazzè family from Rome have restored it to perfection and now its three floors shine. With living rooms, studies and six bedrooms it’s a big generous house for a two-family holiday or a special occasion. Enter to find a lofty beamed sitting room with great big sofas and a sober stone fireplace, a dining room that seats 14, a breakfast room for ten, a cosy study, a large bathroom and a big Italian country kitchen ideal for cookery demonstrations (yes, they hold them). Sweep up the travertine staircase to bedrooms with brick floors, beamed ceilings, fine fabrics and elegant antiques. Bathrooms too are individually styled, with marble basins and stencilled corners, and there’s a great cellar for entertainments. Midway between Lakes Vico and Bracciano, the area is the heart of Etruscan civilization, so don’t miss the amazing frescoes of Cerveteri and Tarquinia. Come home to a dip in the pool.
