The Experience

A slice of colour wherever you look: salmon-pink villas, green maritime pines, blue Magra river, white bobbing yachts. Perched above sleepy Bocca di Magra, this villa enjoys the Ligurian coast away from touristy hot-spots. Rossella, a stylish whirlwind who lives on the top floor, knows everyone worth knowing in the village and is generous with her knowledge: hidden swimming coves, guided fishing trips, UNESCO sites to explore, Lunigiana villages and grand walks. Her eye for design, and her antique-collector background show in the apartments; elegant and striking furnishings, mixing ancient and modern, make the most of their small-ish spaces. Glossy-red or black kitchens slip into corners of rustic-chic living rooms. Bedrooms are pretty in greys and pastels, softly furnished with antiques – perhaps a marble-topped table or boudoir chair. Black-and-white marble floors and modern art add a dash of vibrancy. Bathrooms make elegant use of small spaces: antique washstands, pretty soaps. Each apartment has a private terrace or balcony for outdoor dining. Rossella makes delicious breakfasts for lazy days. Simple elegance.

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Rossella Tommei

  • Cinque Terre and Portofino are a must to be visited by car or by boat from La Spezia. Explore exciting Lunigiana; a wild, antique and hilly landscape, medieval little villages on the top of the hill.
  • Lerici and Portovenere by boat from Bocca di Magra are an unforgettable one day cruise in the poet's gulf. At the end of Portovenere peninsula we can see the three small islands of Palmaria, Tino and Tinetto, three emeralds on the blue sea.
  • In the village of Bocca di Magra, by the small port, there are fantastic restaurants that serve fish fresh from the sea, spaghetti with seafood and mussels, fried 'paranza' and tiramisù. We have a shop selling all types of vegetables and local foods.
  • We have a small market on Tuesday morning, but the bigger one is in Sarzana, a full day road-market selling all types of regional food, vegetables and all sorts of dresses and shoes. On Saturdays another large market in Lerici just by the sea.
  • In August we have the Festival of the mind in Sarzana with lecturers and experts of human mind. Go hunting in the antique fair of Sarzana in August, full of Italian antiques and curiosities in the beautiful medieval and romantic city.
  • In August, in Bocca di Magra, we have the end of Summer fireworks, striking from the sea waters. It's a special performance with dining tables all over the village and locals serving pasta and fish and a glass of white wine from our area with good music.
