The Experience

A heart-warming restoration of part of an old monastery by the interior designer owner; you get the upstairs apartment which is just for two and feels nicely private from the downstairs quarters. Enter through a beautiful, restored wooden door to a swish kitchen with an island and all you need to cook, plus basics, a bottle of Prosecco and nibbles to start you off.

The large living room has a seating area right in front of the windows which allow light to flood in – views over to the lake are stunning from here. You sleep under embroidered linen with fluffy pillows and more watery views to the lake – very romantic.

Catch the ferry to Isola Comacina, Bellagio and Varenna, visit St Moritz, hike in the mountains, swim in the lake, stroll into Sala for your morning cappuccino or dinner by the lake. Your private balcony looks onto a pretty courtyard, just right for an evening drink while you watch the sun go down over the water.

Reviews

The most beautifully furnished apartment with huge bedroom and magnificent views of lake from 6 windows. Fabulous to sit and read and take in sights before heading out to explore the area - boat trips to Com (direct from Sala Comacina), Bellagio from nearby Lenno and Varenna from Menaggio were a highlight. Karen’s restaurant recommendations are spot on especially Crotto Dei Platani about 10 km away. Walk from town and car are tough for anyone with difficulties but didn’t take from fabulous week.

We had the best time spending our Honeymoon and Dolce Mistero - so romantic and a great setting. Would recommend to anyone and everyone

We had a weeks stay in Ambra for our 20th wedding anniversary and what an absolutely perfect location. The apartment is outstanding, it has all your home comforts and more besides & the best washing up view ever!! This was our first holiday on the Italian Lakes & it certainly won’t be the last, Como & Dolce Mistero stole our heart.

We had a lovely stay in Ambra for five days in August. The flat has been done up beautifully, with lots of thoughtful touches, and a really excellent visitor guide giving lots of ideas of what to do in the area. The views from the flat are amazing, and the whole place has a very luxurious feel. It was the perfect place to stay for a relaxing holiday and we were very sad to leave!

We had a wonderful stay in Lake Como and Dolce Mistero (Ambra) helped make that a memorial holiday. Ambra is a beautiful apartment with quality finishings and all accessories that you would want when on holiday. The views were spectacular even in the thunderstorms ! The attention to detail in every respect was welcomed. It is a good walk from the town when you don’t want to use a car but we were grateful for the exercise too! Ambra is a little gem of a place. Thank you

Ambra is a beautiful , spacious apartment with all you need and more to have a fantastic holiday at Lake Como. The level of restoration and decoration is top notch and very attractive. The views of the lake are awe inspiring. Karen is a very helpful host and we used her insider information to make the most of our visit and enjoyed every minute. Local information and treats left for us on arrival were much appreciated. The path to the apartment is a bit steep so not good for those with mobility issues. Very comfortable and very beautiful apartment.

A wonderful stay! Dolce Mistero is a little slice of heaven! Everything we could ask for was in the house including a wonderful gift basket of goodies. Lost of thought had gone into making the house a welcome oasis for their guest. The views are mesmerizing and it was hard to leave each day to go out and explore. We used the bus, and the ferry service to explore the region. The Greenway trail that runs behind the property is wonderful to walk along and see the lake and the rooftops of the villages along Como. We hope to come back again sometime!

It was a fantastic experience! Ambra is a spacious and elegant apartment with enough privacy for us both. Spectacular views on Lake Como, very well-equipped. So, we enjoyed our stay. We enjoyed the Prosecco and goodies on arrival, real kind attentions. The only thing we were unhappy about, is that we only booked for five nights! We will most certainly visit again in the future, as we like Lake Como.

Frank, Belguim

Lovely accommodation with beautiful views. Great information provided by owners. We made use of the ferry service to visit several towns on the lake. The walk to and from the village is steep so wouldn't be suitable for people with mobility issues. Limited outside space, small area for sitting outside in the courtyard. The apartment has everything you need to self cater and is very tastefully furnished. A lovely welcome pack of cake, biscuits, water, wine and milk provided along with coffee for the expresso machine. A lovely weeks stay.

So pleased we decided to stay at Dolce Mistero (Ambra). The flat was really comfy, welcoming, beautifully decorated and had everything we needed. There was a lovely array of welcome gifts (all local produce). The views from the bedroom and living room are hypnotising. Karen has left a really well written manual in the flat which had some excellent suggestions - things we would never have discovered without her insider advice. Hope we go back one day!

Joanna, Charpont

There are not enough superlatives to describe how superb this property, and its situation is!!! Had a wonderful stay in this lovingly restored and well appointed apartment. I would have no hesitation in recommending this property.

Anthony, Lancaster

Absolutely loved our stay here (in Ambra)! The most beautiful accommodation we've stayed in, with stunning views over the lake. The property is stylishly furnished and incredibly well stocked with absolutely everything you could need. We lazed around, took ferries to other towns, walked in the mountains, and ate too much ice cream! It is a steep walk back from the village but we thought it well worth it. Good restaurants in the village too.

Sarah, Sheffield

We stayed in Ambra for 5 nights for a special Anniversary. What a stunning property - beautifully designed. The finish is luxurious, everything has been thought of to ensure a very special stay. The views from the windows are absolutely breathtaking. The kitchen and bathroom are beautiful. All in all a very special place, extremely romantic. The owner was extremely informative in the booking and planning stages of the holiday, answering emails very quickly, professionally and helpfully. The approach to the property is steep so a fairly good level of fitness is required. We hope to return!

Fantastic last minute discovery within an hour of Milan, and also excellently located for some amazing gardens amidst the beautiful scenery of Lago di Como. We stayed in Ambra, the upper and smaller of the two options. Really well considered, executed and maintained accommodation. everything easy to use, including the essential air con. A bit of a trek back up the hill from the local restaurants/shops, but this does lend the place a nice feeling of tranquility from the craziness of the lake road below. The only note of caution; a small car is essential to negotiate the very narrow local roads.

Michael

Dolce Mistero is the perfect romantic break in the hills of Lake Como. If you're looking for somewhere perfectly hidden, with views to die for; to simply sit and enjoy the company of your loved ones and enjoy the local sights, then this is the perfect place. We will most definitely be back ourselves!

Aimee

One of the most beautiful and romantic hideaways you could ever wish to find. Fabulous decor and facilities, spectacular views of the lake and mountains and a great location to easily explore the beautiful Lake Como region. I stayed in the small apartment which was so cute and had a stunning bedroom - my friends stayed in the larger apartment which was just perfect as it gave us he best of both worlds; two pretty courtyards to share as well as privacy when we wanted it. I am going to return again to see the gardens in flower, and try a glass of prosecco in the pool overlooking Lake Como. Wow!

Location

The neighbourhood

The house sits in a small hamlet. The nearest restaurant, La Tirlindana, is a 10-minute walk and serves lovely pasta and freshly caught fish from the lake. Crotto dei Platani is a fine dining experience in Brienno, a 10-minute drive. Ask for an upstairs table on the veranda for stunning sunsets, or make a dashing entrance by boat. Head to Lenno to catch the ferry to almost everywhere on the lake.

Local points of interest from Karen White

  • Top of the list ...... well it has to be the delicious italian food ! Local dishes cooked to perfection.... pizza, pasta...and not forgetting ice cream. Just a stone's throw from Dolce Mistero.
  • Take an evening stroll down to the port at Sala Comacina and watch the sun go down......a romantic meal on the lake shore would finish the night off perfectly !
  • Feeling energetic? The mountains behind Dolce Mistero have walking paths galore..... walk to the Rifugo at the top of the mountain and try some locally produced meats and cheeses. A fitting reward for all your hard work!
  • Lose yourself in the magic of Italy......historic churches, ancient ruins, manicured Italian gardens, restored frescoes, art, music festivals......all the things we love about Italy!
  • How could we not mention the Lake ! It provides the perfect setting at Dolce Mistero......hire a boat and see all the beautiful lakeside villas......we have many famous neighbours! Spend the day at the lido and swim in the lake....
  • Shop till you drop in the chic boutiques in Como! Take the ferry and arrive in style at the port ...there's always a crowd watching the boats come in. The narrow streets are filled with the latest fashions from Milan.... need I say more....?
