The Experience

Head up the winding road in Carate Urio (one deli, a few bars) to this: a lofty 19th-century villa with stunning views of Lake Como.

Its mix of old elegance, high spec design, and years of love and attention makes this the warm family home it is today. Bedrooms, soothing and serene, are on the top two floors. Below are books, games and sofas, proper fires, and a kitchen fit for chefs. In summer sniff the roses, bask by the pool, or play ping-pong and hide and seek in the gardens.

For restaurants and shops you have Cernobbio, 6km. Pick a café by the lake; catch a ferry to Bellagio. Don’t miss the Villa Carlotta, loved for its botanic gardens. From Cernobbio you can also walk a lakeside pathway (5km) into Como. Later recover in the venerable Villa d’Este, with afternoon tea or an aperitivo.

Reviews

Villa By The Lake is the perfect family or friend's get away. This large traditional, but very modern villa inside will have you not wanting to go off and explore. The gardens with a pool over looking Lake Como are wonderfully private and the lovely Gilda wants you to pick the fruit and vegetables from her garden!! Likewise she is happy to advise and help you with any day trip planning.

Location

The neighbourhood

This elevated villa, surrounded by other privately owned properties, feels surprisingly secluded. For walkers, the Via Verde is unmissable, an old mule path with breathtaking lake views that runs 6km from Laglio to Moltrasio. For food-lovers, the owner’s favourite is a five-minute drive: ‘La Locanda del Cantiere’. For restaurants, shops and cafes, Laglio (3km) and Cernobbio (6km) are close.

Local points of interest from Gilda .

  • The house is set around 50m up and behind Lake Como in a 2000 m2 private garden with roses, irises, bougainvillea, wisteria and grape vines. There are peaches, plums, apples and pears, figs and a vegetable plot in the summer and autumn months.
  • Carate Urio is a small village with a corner shop, pharmacy and bar with quite a few good restaurants short and long walks away. The Via Verde is a scenic path that runs behind our house and also George Clooneys house...just saying. Or skiing 90 mins away.
  • The house is a 5 minute walk from bus stops that take you up and down the lake. The ferry stop at Urio takes you across the lake too and is a 15 minute walk. Otherwise Como trains take you anywhere...Milano, Lugano, Torino or just stay by the pool-o!
  • Aside from pretty villlages dotted along the lake and up into the mountains behind, there are many days out including Villa del Balbianello (setting for Star Wars and Bond movies), Villa Carlotta and Bellagio. Use the lake ferry or hire your own Riva boat.
  • If you want to get or stay fit, there are dozens of walks nearby and hundreds a short drive away that wind up the mountains with rewards of home cooked food in local "baitas" and amazing views. Or just take the funiculars if you are already fit enough...
  • The house is homely with comfortable beds, the cantina has all manner of gadgets, bread maker, deep fat frier, soup maker etc but the space is not filled with bits and pieces and dried flowers and clutter. There is a pool table and table tennis and darts.

Introducing

Gilda .

Gilda, whose passions are gardening and art, lived and worked for many years in Como with her husband and family. Today she spends her time between Como, Barcelona and the UK. She or her housekeeper (also fluent in English) settle into the neighbouring villa whenever guests stay, so there’s always someone friendly to hand.
