The Experience

In the 19th-century the Austrian Royal family stayed here for months at a time. Now everyone is treated like royalty and to step out into such peace and beauty in front of this ancient fortress, turned luxurious spa hotel, feels extraordinary. Friendly staff will talk you through the range of spa experiences, advise on sports at every level, and on pillow choices.

The food here is memorable too: buffet lunches and dinners are a treat; breakfasts simply amazing – the selection is vast, including yogurt delivered daily by the farmer whose cows graze at over 1,600m, and prosecco. In nearby Bormio, do dine at the sister Bagni Nuovi hotel and spa restaurant, The Ball Room, or at the traditional Valtellina Restaurante Filo (their local wine list is 250 strong).

Milan is a three hour drive, the lovely (tax free) Livigno 30 minutes, Tirano half an hour.

Wow. One of the best spa experiences I have ever had. Take FULL advantage of the many special offers available Sun-Thur to avoid the weekenders! Enjoy the roman thermal spring waters, treatments, many sporting activities (winter and summer) and the amazing mountain cuisine. Then retire into a luxurious bed for an unbelievable sleep. Did I mention the views? I'll leave that for you to decide! Enjoy

The neighbourhood

Bormio, a 5 to 10-minute drive away, has great mountain cafes, restaurants and outdoor pursuits shops. The surrounding wildlife-rich Stelvio National Park is skiing and nordic walking country and the hotel gladly organises transport. In summer, hiking, biking and climbing are top of the menu. Bormio also has a 9-hole golf course, and summer food/art/craft/antique fairs. And do take a vineyard tour to taste some of Northern Italy’s world-class wines
