This villa is one of four set down a country lane, but high hedges around the garden makes it feel very private. Antonio and Cristina live next door but you’ll let yourself in using an app, which also turns on soft background music and the lights if it’s after dusk.
Find a hand-written note welcoming you along with a crostata, or baked tart; find milk, juice, beer and wine in the fridge. The open-plan downstairs area feels homely with artworks made by Antonio and Cristina, and flows nicely out to the patio and garden.
You’re five minutes from Ispra, which has shops, restaurants and a weekly street market selling local produce. The scenic gardens of the Villa Della Porta Bozzolo are a 15-minute drive and Estensi Gardens, considered some of the most beautiful in northern Italy, are half an hour’s drive. Take a picnic and go walking or hiking in nearby Parco Regionale Campo Dei Fiori, or simply swim and sunbathe by the lake.
