The Experience

Cut off from western Italy by the Apennines is Le Marche; peaceful, charming and unsought-out. At the top of a steep wooded hill is Monterado, a small medieval town of cobbled streets and fabulous views. Beyond is the sea. On a small square in town, opposite the Castello di Monterado (see previous entry) is a solid old stone building housing six apartments with a contemporary and luxurious feel. One is on the ground floor, two are on the first and two are on the second; one spreads itself over two levels. Lofty walls are plastered white, floors are polished parquet, styling is minimalist, classy and sleek. Guests in the apartments can use the pool in the castle gardens; a buffet breakfast is served daily in the castle. In the town are a handful of restaurants and shops, tennis courts and, in May, a hog roast festival to which locals flock; the region is the home of porchetta. If you want beach resorts with a Sixties feel, then head west for the resorts of Le Marche. After a day’s touring, return to the peaceful garden of the Castello, with its cedar trees and scented roses and, beyond, a landscaped woodland with winding paths.

We have just returned from a week in an apartment here. The apartment was very stylish and comfortable with everything you need. We had use of the castle grounds and beautiful pool, all beautifully kept and clean and with stunning views. Orlando, the owner, was very friendly and helpful giving advice on where to visit, restaurants etc. The village is small but has a little grocery shop, a bakery, a shop selling homemade pasta and a restaurant. We would recommend this accommodation. The suites in the castle look amazing too!

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Orlando & Kira Rodano

  • Monterado is a quiet village, located in the hills just 12 km away from Senigallia and it is very easy to reach the beaches, the hills or the enchanting medieval nearby villages.
  • You can have a walk through the centuries-old forest of the Castle, head into the village square to visit the main Church and meet people immersed in their daily lives and buy hot bread in the local bakery.
  • Tavernetta sull'Aia is a cozy restaurant, just 50 meteres away from the Castle, and a happy meeting place for lovers of simple and true flavors of the best culinary tradition of the Marche: handmade pasta, piadina, local meat, homemade desserts.
  • A few kilometers away in the direction of Senigallia, you can also taste the delicacies of La Madonnina del Pescatore and Uliassi, both rewarded over the years with 2 Michelin stars.
  • Discover the surroundings! You can visit lovely walled ancient villages such as Corinaldo and Mondavio (5 and 15 minutes by car). Do not miss the city of Urbino, the cradle of Renaissance (one hour by car) and the Frasassi Grottoes (50 minutes by car).
  • Do you love shopping? You can easily reach from the castle the outlets of some of the most prestigious Italian brands of footwear, clothing and furnishing, strictly made in Italy: Poltrona Frau, Tod's, Prada, Rossi to name a few of them.
