The Experience

The moment you enter the gates – to find vineyards and rolling-hill views – you know you’re in for a treat. This 1750s house within sound of Govone’s bells has been shiningly revived by Bruno and Fulvia. Each of the guest bedrooms is generously proportioned and immaculately presented in modern-classical style: antique tiled floors, frescoed ceilings, chic papered walls. In some, a roll top tub in the bedroom itself, in most, a south-facing balcony. Your hosts – the loveliest family – give you maps, guides, books galore, a fridge with fresh drinks and grappa for the asking. Wonderful to start the day with a feast of home-baked cakes, jams and juices, charcuterie and cheeses, then to set off for Bra, home of Slow Food. Piedmont is a major food and wine area and tourists descend in October for the white truffles of Alba. Adventurous spirits can saddle up (bikes are provided), then come home to a sofa by an ancient fireplace and blush-coloured walls; or find shade under big umbrellas in the manicured gardens. Note that Bruno organises fun wine tastings in the cellar – your chance to sample Langhe and Roero.

If you are looking for a perfect break in the Piemonte area, don't look any further. 'Altrenta' is a classic example of a perfect B&B: charming hosts with a a great eye for detail and professional hotel background, incredible breakfast and beautiful rooms with all the comfort you can wish for. On occasion, a table d'hôte is offered. So if you are lucky you can have a wonderful Piemontese diner, accompanied with a great selection of local wines. All this in a beautiful historical setting. Chances are you want to book your next stay before returning home...

Mathilde, Antwerp

This is an excellent B&B in a beautiful & peaceful hilltop town. The views from the courtyard/garden are wonderful, and what a treat to find the room we had booked had its own terrace with the same beautiful view. As a stopover point in our long journey between Tuscany and the UK, this place was a slice of heaven. You can tell that the renovation of the building has been done with love and respect. The attention to detail is great. The hosts, Fulvia & Bruno, were very welcoming and helpful in finding a restaurant. Breakfast was delightful. Would love to have stayed longer.

Local points of interest from Fulvia Giovanna Battistessa

  • Not far from Alba and Asti is Govone; a small village, at the heart of which is the historic castle surrounded by a large park and gardens. Go walking and biking in the surrounding hills. Local winemakers produce Roero. Visit the cellars for wine tasting.
  • Alba is a vibrant town in the heart of the Langhe and Roero. It's the capital of white truffles and hosts a large fair every October. Alba has a lively calendar of cultural events throughout the year often related to local wine and gastronomy.
  • Barolo and Barbaresco, famous for the wines produced here, are beautiful hillside villages. Explore the vineyards and breathtaking views. Great restaurants are everywhere; try tasty regional dishes. Wine producers often open their cellars for visitors.
  • Visit Turin, famous for its chocolate and sports cars, but there’s so much more. Explore the Egyptian Museum, stroll around Valentino park and wonderful squares such as Piazza Castello. The Mole Antonelliana and Cinema Museum are well worth a visit, too.
  • See the Royal Residences: the 'Venaria' is a network of residences not far from Turin. The palaces and castles host wonderful exhibitions and events throughout the year. You’ll also find prestigious restaurants, wine bars and museums.
  • Visit Antique markets, festivals and fairs throughout Piedmont. See local, national and international exhibitions. At antique markets, buy furniture, paintings and prints from various eras. The festivals offer traditional cuisine and often folk music.
