Casa Parrocchia

Sale San Giovanni, Cuneo

In a tiny hilltop village find a comfortable house & pretty garden with wonderful Alpine views. The best of Piedmont is yours to enjoy

8 beds

6 bedrooms

Sleeps 12

This part of the Langhe is delightfully off-the-beaten-track and those with an adventurous spirit will be well rewarded by steeper hills, more isolated villages and a lasting impression of ancient cultures. In the tiny hilltop village (one shop) of Sale San Giovanni balconies overflow with geraniums, lazy cats stroll around, and your eye is drawn to distant views of the Alps. You stay in the former vicarage on the quaint square. Tim and Liz cleverly maintained original features like the graniglia tiled floors and part of a fresco while adding all the modern comforts you need. Downstairs there’s a big country-chic kitchen and pantry, a comfy sitting room with sofas arranged in front of a open fire, shelves stuffed with books and board games and a dining table large enough for everyone to gather. Family photos, art and sculptures dotted about give it all a homely feel. Bedrooms (one downstairs, the rest up) are view-filled and prettily furnished with flea market finds and patterned bedspreads. All three bathrooms are large. Sporting activities, seaside and sightseeing are all within easy reach.

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Tim Raper

  • Walking. There are great walks through the hills from our house and a few miles away, through vineyards. There are also guide led walks for which further information can be provided. Forty minutes away are the Alps, if you need more of a challenging walk
  • Skiing: In the winter we have three resorts within a 45min drive, almost exclusively frequented by Italians. Prato Nevoso is the largest of the three and lovely if you want to escape the crowds of the more well known European resorts.
  • Swimming: The Mediterranean is 45 minutes drive away. We normally go to the small mediaeval town of Noli on the coast. Here the sea's surface is silky smooth, so not a spot for the surfers but a dream to swim in. Be sure to try some spaghetti vongole.
  • Cycling: It is a passion of the Italians. The hills are fantastic for cycling, but require a certain level of fitness. There are two road bikes in the house which can be used, but please look after them, and yourself.
  • Wine: The famous Langhe Wine growing region of Piemonte lies to the south of its capital Alba. It is characterised by rolling hills, vineyards and winding roads, delivering breath taking scenery around every corner.
  • Food: the high season for all food lovers is the late autumn. When the mushroom and truffle harvest begins, the restaurants offer a wide range of exquisite local Piemonte products. Five minutes walk to nearest Osteria for a feast!
