The
Experience

Ten minutes from Moncalvo the house is reached up a bumpy narrow country road in the heart of glorious wine country. It was built as a barn in the 17th century: animals below, hay above. Now it is painted a gentle pink and is large, charming and homely. Downstairs is a country kitchen excellently equipped, with a checkerboard floor and a double stove, and a big cosy loggia outside. If you’re dining indoors, the table seats eight, and there’s a log-stocked fireplace for wintery days โ€“ delightful. The sitting room is upstairs: imagine an old brick floor, a big tapestry behind a big sofa and a ladder to a book-stuffed mezzanine under the rafters. Best of all? A wall of windows for breathtaking views; on a clear day you can see the Alps. Wine and white truffles, this is what people visit for; Asti is close and Barolo 40 minutes. Return to fruit trees and a great big pool, a summer kitchen and a pool house that sleeps an extra two, if needed. There are two more bedrooms, a studio for two and a master bedroom: tufa walls, an ornate antique bed, a kilim rug on a tiled floor, and a charming balcony for the morning sun.

Local points of interest from Gabriela Deoliveira

  • The house is made for entertaining. Enjoy breathtaking views from the pool while you BBQ, or relax with a sunset aperitivo on the terrace, nibbling on freshly picked figs and olives and sipping wine made with grapes from around the property.
  • Moncalvo is a charming medieval fortress town. The smallest city in Italy, it boasts a great Thursday market, three cafes for drinks and ice creams, at least two fabulous restaurants, a playground, and lots of boutiques selling typical Piemontese products.
  • Take a day trip to one of the famous lakes, Lake Garda, with its beautiful walk of silence around its tiny island before settling down to a lovely lunch on the water's edge. Don't forget bathing suits if you want a dip in the cool clear waters!
  • For a bit of culture; Turin less than an hour to the west with its elegant plaza surrounded by grand cafes and majestic museums, or Genoa, gateway to the Liguirna coast, one hour south, where pesto and seafood is order of the day.
  • Explore this unspoiled wine country, which has some of the finest wines in Italy: Alba and Barolo, as well as many wonderful producers of Barbera, who will welcome you with generous wine tastings accompanied by local salami and cheese, no booking required.
