Villa Silvio Pellico

Moncalieri, Turin

A jaw-dropping setting for a memorable family holiday – a grand 18th century castello with all the comforts of home

7 beds

5 bedrooms

Sleeps 8

Who hasn’t wanted a neo-gothic castle to themselves? And when it’s immersed in the beautiful grounds of a classical Italian garden designed by Russell Page, resistance is futile. Charming owner Raimonda lives in the main villa, from where she runs the estate. Even though it’s just 15 minutes from Turin, the setting is incredibly quiet and peaceful. From the outside, your castle looms impressively – three floors of crenellated gothic enchantment. Inside, noble ancestral portraits and antique furniture with hints of cheerful Chinoiserie give a warm, lived-in feel – as if the owners have just popped out. Three bedrooms on the first floor have gondola beds and leafy green wallpaper echoing the garden – their bathrooms are venerable but pristine. From here you can swan about on the terrace overlooking the park. Downstairs a black and white marble floor leads to a well-equipped rustic kitchen next to the stately dining room for those royal banquets. The living room, light and colourful, is the perfect place to rest and recuperate. Two child-friendly bedrooms on the lower ground floor have access to the private garden.

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Raimonda Lanza di Trabia

  • The estate was once the property of the Marquesses of Barolo, once the most affluent family of Piedmont. Napoleon is said to have given the plane trees visible in the park. The House is Neoclassic, while the Chapel and Castle are in gothic revival style.
  • The park is very old and designed in accordance with the English fashion. The new garden has been designed by Russell Page, the most renown landscape designer of the 20th Century. The result is a fine combination of formal and romantic.
  • This is a graded historical place still lived in by a family with selected amateurs/visitors coming from all over the world.
  • Piedmont is a marvelous country: ski areas are the most extended in Italy, food is excellent, the wine and truffles area is 40 minutes away. International Airport is 40 mn. drive.
  • In Turin you find the most impressive royal residences (Palazzo Madama, Palazzo Reale) and museums (Galleria Sabauda and Modern Art),quality shopping and excellent restaurants. Two fashion outlets are not distant (Turin Outlet 30 mn. and Serravalle 75 mn.)
  • The Royal Castles of Stupinigi, Venaria Reale, Villa della Regina and Racconigi are nearby. The Egyptian Museum in Turin is the most important in the world, after Il Cairo's. The Cinema Museum and the Motorcar ("Automobile") Museum are unique in Italy.
