The Experience

Buy the day’s catch from across the square, carry it home with a local wine, and eat al fresco. Down a flower-filled alley behind the Church of San Lorenzo are two immaculate retreats. The apartment below has a stone vaulted ceiling and a verdant patio. The one above, an extra sofa bed and a pretty little terrace. What sweeter spot to spend a holiday?

Thanks to the owners who live next door, each is perfectly kitted out – from beach towels to cool bag to well-stocked larder. Each apartment is ideal for a couple, and if you take the apartment upstairs, you can come as three.
There’s a smattering of shops and restaurants in this small white town, midway between the coasts. From Gallipoli in the west (30km) to Otranto in the east, you can swim in the sea until September. Don’t miss little Punta della Suin, its turquoise waters and its gorgeous sands.

Kathy and Ray are the perfect hosts, and we echo all the comments in the reviews here. The Apartment is well equipped, and the terrace, surrounded by plants, like a hanging garden, is a great place to relax. We enjoyed Otranto, Nardo, Lecce and the coast road south from Otranto to Santa Maria di Leuca. Not to be missed is the Basilica in Galatina, for the magnificent frescoes, just minutes from Sogliano. The very good Primitivo from Cantina Palama in Cutrofiano, is a steal for just 3 euros a litre. Oh and the bells, the wonderful bells! Thankyou Kathy and Ray.

Steve, Bristol

The apartments here are fully stocked and you can leave the stress of the daily grind at the airport. This oasis of tranquility is located in a small town in Salento, driving distance from all the natural beauty and cultural attractions. The main activities here will be eating good food, soaking up the sunshine, visiting the local sites and fully recharging your batteries.

We had a fantastic week staying in Casa Violetta. It was like home from home without doing any chores! The apartment was very comfortable and extremely well stocked. Kathy and Ray had thought of everything, beach towels, cool bag, lots of information, dvd's and a very generous well stocked larder. What a treat! Our hosts were on hand whenever we needed them but they never intruded. We enjoyed eating and drinking on the verandah with its lovely pots of plants and herbs. The apartment is in a very quiet street, although the church bells were a bit of a shock the first morning!

Lorna, Norwich

The apartment was fantastic! It was clean, well equipped and comfortable. The balcony was excellent for dining outside. Location was great - close to both the east and west coasts. Parking was convenient. The Apartment is at the heart of a quaint town, Sogliano Cavour, which is great to explore. We would highly recommend this apartment. Thank you Kathy and Ray.

We found our stay at Casa Violetta thoroughly relaxing. Ray and Kathy are incredibly knowledgeable, friendly and really helped to make our stay. The studio is cosy under it's vaulted ceiling but also roomy enough for two to spread out. We especially enjoyed sitting outside for drinks and nibbles. The area around has some definite hot spots - Gallipoli, Otranto, Leuca and - best of all - Lecce. Swimming in the sea at the end of September was a treat.. we'd love to return.

Samantha, Bristol

An absolutely wonderful place to stay - Ray and Kathy were perfect hosts, and the kitchen is incredibly well-equipped, it was just like cooking at home. Not only is the flat a lovely place to laze but it's brilliantly located for supermarkets and to journey further afield.

Stephen, London

A perfect holiday. Ray and Kathy are lovely hosts who were incredibly helpful, and the kitchen is fantastically equipped, every bit as good as our own. An added bonus is that it's both a lovely place to laze around and really well-located for surrounding beaches and sights.

Stephen, London

This was our second time at Casa Violetta and it was as good as when we first visited. Kathy and Ray are superb host, knowledgeable and helpful but, they also respect their guest's privacy. The apartment is beautiful and everything is provided, washing machine good cooking facilities except for a dishwasher (but then I brought him with me). The area around Sogliano Cavour is full of wonderful little towns to explore if that's not your thing then there are excellent beaches at Riva Bella and lido Conchiglie just north of Gallipoli. We both would recommend this apartment and we will return.

Jenny, Bristol

We stayed in Casa Violetta, it suited us perfectly, very comfortable and well appointed. Kathy and Ray were so helpful and welcoming providing us with lots of local information. Otranta and Gallipoli are lovely and the coastline is beautiful.

Anne, Reading

This is a special place with very friendly and helpful owners. Great location as you are between two coasts with many beaches and beautiful towns to explore. Ray and Kathy have equipped the apartment and studio with everything you need. We all had a very pleasant stay. Thank you Ray and Kathy.

Claire, Hastings

We received a most warm welcome to the lovely Casa Violetta from Kathy and Ray. Their accommodation provided a comfortable, architecturally intriguing and 'different' home-from-home for the length of our stay. It was SO well equipped and the outdoor area a pleasure to relax in. Parking was plentiful, locals friendly and Kathy's restaurant recommendation in the town a great success. Our hosts were discretely on hand if we needed anything. Thank you for a lovely stay. Highly recommended.

My husband and I loved our visit to Casa Violetta. After a long drive from Naples it was great to welcomed by Kathy and Ray and their beautiful apartment, which felt like a home from home. Situated in a typically small Italian town it was great having Kathy and Ray's knowledge of the local area and language to help us make the most of our stay. The apartment was clean, comfortable and modern and came equipped with a list of great beaches and restaurants that they had compiled so we knew were going to be good. We would recommend this to anyone wanting to escape the tourist track, just perfect..

A beautifully equipped and maintained apartment in a small southern Italian town. Cafes, restaurants and supermarkets all within walking distance. Kathy and Ray were available to provide any advice or assistance requested ... truly perfect hosts! The geographic location is ideal - almost equidistant from the east west and south coasts. In two weeks we saw a great deal of the area and had the opportunity to return to favourite spots. For anyone wanting a taste of a rural Italy, away from non Italian tourists this is a must. A perfect holiday at a reasonable price.

A lovely, well appointed and well equipped apartment situated in a quiet corner of a traditional Southern Italian town. The owners, Ray and Kath, live close by and are excellent hosts – friendly, knowledgeable and happy to help or advise at any time. Southern Puglia is genuine rural Italy, in many ways unspoilt and unchanged for decades. During a very cold and wet February in the UK it was wonderful to enjoy warm sunshine by day and a cosy, relaxed apartment by night. Very much recommended.

A lovely apartment fitted with everything necessary for a comfortable stay. Top quality furniture and fittings and nice balcony to eat out in the open for breakfast or dinner. Supermarkets and restaurants all within 5 minute walk and parking on the street outside. terrific fresh fish across the square every day. Ray and Kathy very helpful out of sight but there whenever needed with advice on places to visit, to eat and buying excellent Primitivo. We didn't use the studio but that too is superbly fitted out and will be a cool resting place in the heat of the summer. Highly recommended.

We had a wonderful time staying in for a week. The spacious accommodation is immaculate; it is beautifully renovated with features of the old building. We loved eating our meals on the terrace, surrounded by carefully-tended flowers, drinking wine from the local vineyard. The only draw-back was the church bells (immediately behind the flat) which ring at sunrise each morning. Ray and Kathy, are brilliant hosts who are not intrusive but are ready to give advice when needed and are passionate about the area. We would highly recommend this as a relaxing holiday to enjoy traditional Italy.

The neighbourhood

Sogliano Cavour is a small sleepy Salento town between the Ionian and Adriatic seas, 14km south of Lecce, the baroque 'Florence of the south'. Closer still is Galatina, a sleeping beauty a ten-minute drive; don’t miss its churches San Pietro & Paola, and the Basilica of St Caterina. Sogliano Cavour has a few simple bars and restaurants, the most wonderful of which is La Locanda di Buck

Local points of interest from Ray & Kathy Davey

  • Salento is a great all year round destination. There are many unspoilt rocky or sandy beaches and friendly towns and villages to visit all year. Sogliano Cavour has local bars, restaurants and shops all within walking distance of our apartments.
  • Nearby is a large pine forest and a riding centre. We are equidistant to the east and west coasts and only 20 minutes drive to their beautiful beaches. 'The Maldives of Salento' near the most southerly point of Santa Maria di Leuca is worth a visit
  • Olive and wine growing are the main agricultural industries in the area and you can also buy local handmade pottery. Buy your wine and vegetables a stone's throw away and Italian ice-cream which has less fat as it is made from milk and not cream.
  • The towns of Soleto, Galatina, Cutrofiano and Corigliano D’Otranto are all within a five minute drive or thirty minutes walk from our apartments and all have a variety of cafe bars, restaurants and historic churches.
  • Lecce is an exciting place to visit and is only less than 25 minutes away by car. It is rich in historical and religious heritage and is known as the “Florence of the South” because of it’s baroque architectural style.
  • Visit local markets and come home and perfect your Italian cooking skills. Recommended for anyone wanting to escape the tourist track. Casa Violetta is in a great location for anyone wanting a taste of rural Italy
