The Experience

Off the narrow village street, through the massive gates, you enter another world: a big central courtyard set with box hedges, an ancient winery carved into the rock, and imposing walls dripping with creepers.

The elegant, airy rooms of this 18th-century masseria are vaulted in Mediterranean style. Wake to a buffet breakfast – a feast of fruits, homemade cakes, jams and fresh tomato friselle – in a lofty room that leads out to the pool.
You can eat authentically – and well – at ‘Trattoria da Picalo’, a three-minute stroll. Or set off for Castro (6km), a charming walled town with coves, views and a clifftop piazza. For dunes, sands and crystal-clear waters, head for Alimini. You’ll be there in half an hour and it’s wonderful for families.

Reviews

Everything was perfect; the house, the rooms, the breakfast, and of course Anna's kindness. We were so sad to leave.

Alice, Paris

We had a wonderful stay; the staff were friendly and kind and everything was perfect. The Masseria is magnificent!

Sylvie, France

This impressive property is in the centre of Spongano so a short walk from the town square and church. The rooms are decorated in a charming traditional style and much of the produce is home grown. Anna and Elena are very welcoming and are currently updating a lot of the property. This location is particularly good to travel around the very tip of the heel to Castro and Santa Maria de Leuca

Caroline, Sawday's inspector

La Macchiola is a charming and comfortable B & B and Anna was most welcoming. The courtyard and pool area are beautiful, well attended and full of flowers. The rooms are spacious and well equipped.

Penny

An absolutely beautiful residence with a very comfortable and attractive room. Anna was a delight and was very welcoming and helpful. She was always very eager to be any assistance possible. The breakfasts were superb and varied. The staff were wonderful and we were always made to feel very welcome and, indeed, special. A wonderful retreat in the middle of the Puglian countryside. I would definitely recommend a stay here. Such a treat.

Avril

Location

The neighbourhood

Among the olive groves of Salento, ten minutes from the rocky coastline and the Adriatic Sea, the small town of Spongano offers an authentic slice of Puglian life: narrow streets, a baroque church, and a large piazza with two bars and a trattoria where the prices are truly local. Back home you have a pool, and classes and classes can be arranged: cookery, yoga, pilates, and dance. Massages too.

Local points of interest from Anna Addario-Chieco

  • In La Macchiola there are four bikes available to borrow for any cycling trip you want to do in the area. If you, instead, want to stay in the house you can play a match with the table football.
  • The Saturday market in Poggiardo is rich in scents and colors of fresh fruits and vegetables to buy and taste. The ovens churn out fresh bread and fragrant 'friselle', seasoned with the best olive oil from our ancient olive trees.
  • There is a summertime folk festival on May 1st in Diso - a typical village 2km away, famous for their spectacular light decorations and popular music. All summer villages offer fetes with music and street food.
  • The trattorias will let you enjoy the best cuisine of Salento. The Masseria was also awarded a price for kindness & hospitality in the Italian TV show Cortesie per gli Ospiti B&B
  • The clear sea is 5 km away and is waiting for a dip or a boat trip to discover the caves. It is also interesting to visit the cathedral of Oranto and walk along the castle's high walls.
  • In the Autumn e Spring you can book onto workshops and courses: cooking, 'pizzica' (salento dance), yoga and pilates.
