The Experience

Smell the orange blossom, pat the horses, splash in the pool. Orange orchards and olive groves flourish on this wonderful old estate on the border of Puglia, where the quality of the produce is superb.

Choose between wide serene bedrooms with verandas, and self-catering apartments and villas. Some have small gardens (nice for families). Enjoy the flat landscape and set off on the bikes, or stroll: the elderly estate dog is a willing guide. Such activity warrants long lazy lunches, and you will not eat better than here.

Don’t miss Unesco-listed Matera, 40km. Overlooking the amazing Gravina gorge, it’s been inhabited since prehistoric times. Or ancient Ginosa, your closest town, which sprawls across Gravina’s sides. For sea air and exercise, drive 20 minutes south to Marina de Ginosa… riding on the beaches is a delight.

Reviews

We stayed just one night but wished it was longer. We were definitely out of season - we were the only guests, and had the run of the place - but we were made extremely welcome. We were hit by the scent of orange blossom on arrival and the very friendly nose of Vita, the estate dog, who was our guide while walking and cycling around the beautiful orange and olive groves. Our room was elegant and stylish with a very comfortable bed and hot shower and seated area at the back. We managed a swim in the lovely pool and our evening meal was outstanding. Can’t wait to return!

This oasis on the border of Apulia and Basilicata is a haven for good food and relaxation. The orange groves go on and on and you can get lost in them as you explore by bike. The rooms are stylish and comfy and you can almost imagine losing your grip on reality as you really let your hair down and enjoy the world around you, alternatively try a few day trips to Matera, the mountains or the beach.

Location

The neighbourhood

Find walking routes on the map in the grounds. There’s plenty going on here: ping-pong, tennis, swimming, cycling, meeting the animals and enjoying wonderful food. Head for Ginosa (15km) for restaurants, bars and shops. Drive to Castellaneta Marina (20km) for golden, sloping sands; it's best to pay to be on one of the lidos.

Local points of interest from Carlo Lunati

  • La Gravina di Laterza is part of the grand canyon of Europe, in some parts it is over 200 metres deep, in fact it is the second largest in Europe. It is also home to the LIPU oasis, a sanctuary for birds.
  • 2. G. Inglese Sartoria Since 1955 this world famous brand has made hand-sewn garments according to the best traditional methods of sewing. Fine fabrics and attention to detail really embody the excellence of 'Made in Italy'
  • 3. La Latteria Near the city of Sassi, in a small simply shop you will find the wonderful Latteria. Emanuele Rizzi offers a selection of local wines pared with traditional dishes, mixed cured meats and local cheeses offered with honey and jam.

Introducing

Carlo Lunati

Carlo, the courteous owner, does not live on site. However, manager Georgio and his hands-on team could not be more helpful or welcoming. Occasional jazz in the old stables and weekly film nights sound like fun.
