9 places

Sleeping from 2 – 4

Plenty of Italians haven’t heard of Sant’Antioco and tourism has hardly made an impact so it’s a really special experience for off the track travellers – if you avoid high summer you’ll almost have the place to yourselves.Your cool little refuge with a distant view of the sea (you can walk to a beach in 20 minutes) is simple and sweet with a covered porch and a shared lawn. Basics for breakfast will be left for you and you can stock up in town just a ten-minute drive away.Explore the island on foot, bike, horseback or quad, stopping for views from myrtle-scented hillsides and wild swimming or surfing at empty beaches, coves and bays. Visit wineries, cheesemakers and fish markets, return for languid drinks on the lawn as the sun sinks gaudily into the sea.

The neighbourhood

An hour’s drive from Cagliari and you’re on the causeway to the island – it’s that easy. Pick up supplies as you pass through the town of Sant’Antioco – your destination is a whole 15km across the island on the west coast. Exploring is the name of this game – you can drive, walk, quad bike, cycle, or hire a local fisherman to take you round the island and lunch on the catch of the day. Surfers of all ilks will find plenty to keep them busy too.

Local points of interest from Marongiu Cristina

  • The estate is away from noisy crowds, where one can admire beautiful sunsets and the night sky, amidst the scents of the Mediterranean.
  • The houses are a 10 minute-drive from Sant’Antioco, the oldest city in Italy, where there are numerous archaeological sites from the Phoenician-Punic and Roman period.
  • Do you love horse-riding? The stables are just minutes away from the estate. Quad and bicycle excursions are also available.
  • The estate is 10 minutes away from the most beautiful beaches of Sant’Antiocco: Maladroxia, Calalunga, Cala Sapone, Co de Quaddus, Cala sella Signora, Cala Grotta. L'arco dei baci...
  • On the beach, facing the sea of Calaspone, savour the tasty cuisine of Mario E Pinella.
  • Sant’Antioco also offers Kitesurfing and Windsurfing schools.

Marongiu Cristina

Lovely Maria Cristina spotted a gap in the market five years ago and transformed her family’s country property into these charming holiday apartments. Her love for the island and Sardinia is reflected in the local handicrafts that decorate the rooms. She runs a local shop, and she and her husband are on hand if you need advice about things to do or places to see.
