The Experience

A wonderful setting for this handsome old farmhouse tucked deeply into the hilly lava countryside between Etna (grand view from the house) and the Nebrodi mountains (another grand view from the other side of the house). Friendly Saro and Mariolina have both spent time working in hotels so know how to look after you: breakfast indoors or out on homemade cake, fresh local cheeses, warm bread; supper might be frittelle di ricotta, polpette, timballo or roast pork – proper home cooking with vegetables from their own patch in the garden. Bedrooms are unfussy and uncluttered with bright cubist paintings on the walls, white embroidered curtains, wild flowers, fruit and simple furniture; basic bathrooms with modern mosaic tiles are spotless. Wander through an open courtyard to the garden, the owners’ vineyard, a swimming pool for a cooling splash, and then open countryside (swathed in wild flowers in spring). Further afield there are miles of walking trails through the Alcantara reserve or the mountains, a beautiful pebble beach at Fiumefreddo; Castiglione and Randazzo are worth a snoop around. Bucolic bliss.

Lovely refurbished ancient winery in quiet and peaceful spot surrounded by long views of hilly countryside including closeby Mount Etna. The owners, Mariolina and Saro were very warm and helpful in pointing out to us best ways to get anywhere, provided excellent and varied breakfast and good local cooking for evening meal. Recommended whether with or without children.

Il Tanaceto Il Tanaceto catches the eye of the opulent sun And we bask in the warmth of her smile. As a breeze lazily moves the air I sip coffee and dream for a while. It’s a pause in time, a place in a space Where urgency no longer holds sway And the tick of the clock is hushed by the sky As its azure blankets the day. I’ve stopped in hotels around the world, Four weeks or just for weekends. But this isn’t like that, this isn’t a “product” This is like staying with friends.

Three perfect days, nights and meals. Rural bliss. Mariolina and Saro couldn't have looked after us better: hospitable, generous fonts of knowledge about the area, and the food. Highly recommended and good value for money.

An Etnean treasure. Accommodation delightfully rustic, very comfortable and cleaned daily. A great location to visit Etna, Catania and the coastal towns. Maria and Saro are very hospitable. They offer typical Sicilian meals accompanied by local wine which are a delicious combination (we ate with them on 2 of our 4 nights). Breakfast is again a feast with a fresh baked cake each morning plus home made preserves in addition to the usual selection. Mariolina gives great advice on things to do and places to visit. We would highly recommend Il Tanaceto and will be returning.

Lovely simple and comfortable accommodation in a great location. Lots to do and see in the area including excursions to the remarkable Etna and the Alcantara Gorge. Taormina and the coast are not far But this is a brilliant place to stay for walking, riding and cycling. We wished we had booked in for longer than our two nights. We think this would be especially good for a group of friends wanting to holiday together and enjoy the fabulous countryside.

We spent 3 nights at Il Tanaceto in July and had a wonderful time with our 2 kids (7 and nearly 4). We had adjoining bedrooms, both en-suite, which were very comfortable with ample storage. The pool was great and the food amazing and remarkably good value. But the best bit of our stay was how at home we felt straight away. Mariolina was quite simply the best hostess going out of her way to ensure we were all happy - incl. cooking an early tea for our boys and arranging a fabulous volcano tour with a local guide Ezio. She even bought our son a birthday present!. Thoroughly recommended :-)

We have just returned from 5 blissful nights at il Tanaceto. Far away from the hustle and bustle of city life, but close enough for many excursions to Mount Etna, Nebrodi mountains, Toarmina and so much more. There are many walks from the house into the countryside where we saw many varieties of butterflies and beautiful wild flowers. Breakfast was served on the terrace and dinner in a dining room which was once where they made the wine from the vineyard. Maria & Saro were perfect hosts - nothing was too much trouble for them no matter how busy they were. We shall return.

31/10/15. Although a bit out of the way, il Tanaceto is in a lovely location with views of distant hillside villages. Maria couldn't have been a more wonderful host, always warm and friendly and going out of her way to make us welcome and comfortable. We had two relaxing evenings with very tasty home cooked food. Although we had booked a meal the first night, she was very flexible and suggested we should instead go to the walnut festival in a nearby village which we thoroughly enjoyed. This was by far the best place we stayed at in 2 weeks in Sicily and we recommend it very highly.

We had a week at Tanaceto and it was perfect, as were our hosts, Saro and Mariolina - so welcoming, entertaining, and determined to fill us with every Sicilian delicacy! So good were the suppers, many of whose vegetables were grown just beyond the swimming pool, that we never ate out in the evening. If you seek somewhere quiet, yet close to coast, inland and mountain (Etna, where the tanacetos [tansies] grow), Il Tanaceto is the place to go. Arriving as strangers we left as friends, and sad. Wonderful.

Our first and favourite place to stay in sicily. Despite torrential storms, Maria and saro were fabulous in making us welcome and their home cooking was definitely the best food in our 10 day stay. We felt their place was perfect for sawdays and would love to return and see etna from their vineyards in place of fog! We hope they do well, they deserve to. Lovely ambience.

We stayed at Il Tanaceto with our young children for 3 nights this August and loved it! The owners, Mariolina and Saro were expert hosts, providing the best Italian home-cooked food - amazing breakfasts and evening meals if you book, a lot of which is from their own garden! The place is so peaceful, with vineyards all around and a beautiful swimming pool - a perfect place to relax when you get home from day trips. It's a perfect spot from which to explore the north side of Mount Etna, which is must less touristy than the South side - all arranged by Marionlina. Perfect!

Local points of interest from Maria Tommasi

  • Volcano Etna is a world apart, and a fascinating place to visit all year round - and only a 40 minute drive. Ask for a private guide.
  • Alcantara River with its gurne ( small lakes) is close to us and well worth visiting. There are lovely walking routes starting directly from our place.
  • We can organise donkey trekking up to Etna for children and their parents.
  • Discover recipes passed down to me by my grandmother in one of our a cooking classes! If possible we use the vegetables from our own organic garden.
  • For those who love the sea, we're only a half hour drive from the long beach of Marina di Cottone.
  • If you love hiking we can organize short or long excursions in the nearby woods of Parco dei Nebrodi.
