The Experience

You are perched at the summit of teetering Castiglione, with views from every angle over rooftops and vineyards all the way to snow-topped Etna. Inside is on three levels: find a luminous art-and-sculpture-filled living room with French windows, plenty of comfortable sofas, bronze lamps and Modica stone floors; a dining room with an antique table and a gorgeous collection of pea green china plates. The suite is huge and views from here are stunning, the second bedroom is nicely private on the next level up, and the Cave Room on the ground floor is carved from the sandstone rock. Bathrooms are sparkling and tiled, towels are thick and fluffy. You’re looked after by the housekeeper, Maria – she will make cakes and breads to order, and can cook you a delicious Sicilian supper too; breakfast on the terrace overlooking the volcano is special indeed. It’s tempting to stay put but there’s much to discover nearby: Castiglione has ancient Greek origins, Byzantine churches and a fortified tower; Etna can be explored on foot, horseback or jeep; local wine tasting is a must. Owner Denise lives on site in another building and can give wise counsel.

Reviews

We stayed with Donna Denise for three nights. It was honestly the most spectacular experience. We had such a fabulous welcoming and brilliant room overlooking the beautiful village with such a clear view of Mount Etna. The breakfasts were magnificent on the sunny terrace. Denise shared lots of local history and best places to visit - suggested a wonderful geologist for our hike up Mount Etna, delicious restaurants and also came food shopping with us on our last day in another local village. We will never forget our stay. Thank you Donna Denise. Hope we will see you again!

Julia, London

Denise was a charming and most helpful and accommodating host. We had not realised that we were staying in her fabulous home until we arrived. We took the suite and one additional room. The accommodation is finished to an exacting high standard all designed by Denise herself. We enjoyed a feast for breakfast each morning on the terrace overlooking Etna. We visited Taormina and Etna during our short stay. Each evening we visited a local restaurant. Take note that the streets are narrow in Castiglione so a small car is a must.

A truly beautiful place to spend the first days of one’s honeymoon in its suite! Book it now! Donna Denise’s hospitality is exceptional, her home is tasteful and luxurious, the views are breathtaking & the breakfasts are delicious. This remarkable village is a wonderful place to explore on foot. We arrived without a car, being driven there by a driver from Palermo & spent the next five days exploring the village on foot, and taking some trips with the fantastic driver, Carmello of Dream Cars/Trips. Denise put us in touch with him. With him we had trips to Taormina, Mount Etna & it’s vineyard’s

Carolyn, Edinburgh

A peaceful, relaxing haven with wonderful views and a perfect hostess. Denise was welcoming and helpful. Breakfast was delicious, our room was fabulous and the bed was the most comfortable in Sicily!

Trish, Weybridge

Denise was the most generous and helpful hostess. The suite decor and appointments are stunning, bed super comfy and the view from our bedroom window of Etna and surrounds was breathtaking. Breakfast was an interesting and abundant array of local produce and bottomless cups of coffee. Glamorous and sumptuous are the words that comes to mind

Denise's house and hospitality are amazing. The house is situated on the top of the village, with stunning view of Mount Etna and the village. Indoors, it is beautiful and comfortable. We stayed in 2 rooms: one which is carved out of the rock, and the elegant suite with amazing balcony, bathroom and library. Every detail is thoughtfully planned and tastefully fine: from mattress to the pictures on the walls. And Denise: great hostess. She (and Oksana) welcomed us warmly, saw to every detail of our needs, entertained us for aperitivo and an interesting chat. Highly recommended!

Denise’s warm welcome and Oksana’s friendly interpreting made our stay in this lovely village even more memorable. The wonderful views from all three of our very comfortable and stylish bedroom and the location made this our favourite place to stay during our ten-day holiday. The views of smoking Mount Etna were mesmerising. All the recommendations (wine tasting) and Oksana’s family restaurant were superb. We particularly enjoyed the wonderful modern art displayed around the house that was at the very top of this picturesque village that didn’t feel touristy. Thank you Denise.

Kate, Sussex

Denise and Oksana were so welcoming and helpful, the views are wonderful, the breakfast freshly made and superlative and the house and room immaculate. As we are from Australia we say 'do yourself a favour' and consider this. Castiglioni is 'typical' Sicliy and a good base but we tended to return early as sitting on the verandah was so peaceful. the stairs will keep you fit too!

Alexander, Perth

We were so pleased to have picked this wonderful b&b as part of our two week holiday. Of all the places we stayed, this one has stuck with us. We had the suite which has breathtaking views and we were fortunate enough to see a minor Etna eruption, a truly memorable once in a lifetime experience. If you can do try and take the suite, it’s worth every penny. Denise and Oksana couldn’t do enough to help us with recommendations on parking and where to eat. Oksana’s family restaurant is just round the corner with authentic Sicilian cuisine at reasonable prices.

Gemma, London

Such a very special place and Denise a lovely, elegant and inspiring host who evidently poured her creative heart into her fantastic hilltop “Dimora”. Beautifully appointed and comfortable room with a fantastic unrestricted hilltop view towards Etna and sweeping vistas of the vines and mountains around. Denise and her right-hand Oksana, offer loads of friendly hospitality, including a scrumptious and freshly made breakfast that Oksana lovingly prepares and serves on the beautiful terrace overlooking Etna and the valley. Romantic medieval hilltop-town living at its very best. Highly recommended

SUENETTE, Cape Town

Many sincere thanks to our host Denise, and her professional assistants Oksana and Stephania, for an unforgettable stay. I'm so glad I chose this charming boutique hotel to start our first trip to Sicily, celebrating our 10th wedding anniversary. The suite is truly beautiful as are the lounge, terraces, balconies and dining room. the furnishings and decor are impeccable. I could quite happily spend a week here without even leaving the place! Denise arranged for Maria, a lady from the village, to prepare an authentic special dinner for us, which was a wonderful end to our first day.

Nasreen, Oxford

Wow! Our stay at La Dimora del Castelluccio was truly unforgettable. The house has been thoughtfully renovated so that the stunning surrounding scenery is visible from almost anywhere. The location at the top of Castiglione di Sicilia offers incredible views of Etna but is also within driving distance of major sites around Etna and the coast around Taormina. The hospitality of our host Denise was most welcoming and we felt very much at home. Every morning we were offered a generous breakfast of local delicacies, which were some of the best products we tried all holiday. Thank you!

Melissa, London

La Dimora del Castellucio was the perfect finale to our Sicilian trip. Denise has made her home into a stylish, extremely comfortable b & b with the most beautiful views from every balcony. Her assistant Oksana speaks very good English, and between the two of them they helped organised our trip up Etna, and find a restaurant nearby to eat in (there are several within easy walking distance). The breakfasts were wonderful, with fresh fruits, ricotta, hams, and an apricot tart which Denise made the night before.

Amanda, London

La Dimora del Castellucio is a stylish intimate b&b at the very top of the ancient village with fantastic views of Mount Etna and the surrounding countryside. Denise and her English speaking assistant Oskana warmly welcomed us and very personally made our visit special with help and advice. The rooms are extremely comfortable with modern bathrooms - we were on the top floor with a little balcony overlooking the village. Denise has restored the whole house beautifully, with a mix of contemporary and antique furniture and art. Delicious breakfasts on the terrace.

shirley, sussex

This house has been lovingly restored by the owner, Denise, and is modern yet classic - and very, very elegant. The bedrooms overlook Etna and the medieval village and the valley. The rooms are spacious and beautifully appointed with artworks which Denise has collected throughout her life. Our bed and linens were luxurious. Breakfasts are organic fruits and freshly baked bread and local made cheeses and meats. The house is at the top of the village beside the castle so you feel that you are in a fairtyale... 100% recommend for couples looking for simple luxury and true Italian hospitality

Samantha, Co Clare

Luxury. The house, the suite, the welcome, the breakfasts. Denise has created a sophisticated, relaxing haven in a stunning location, right at the very top of a stunning historical Sicilian hill town, with stunning views of Etna and the surrounding countryside. Nothing seems to be too much trouble for Denise and Oksana, who are committed to making your stay the very best it can be. Denise took it on herself to introduce us to many excellent local wines, and the ever happy Oksana saw to it that we had everything we wanted, and more. The Etna 4x4 and Fiat 500 tours are outstanding experiences.

Brian & Gill, London

Our stay at La Dimora was the highlight of our visit to Sicily. Denise & Oksana made us very welcome and we felt privileged to be able to share Denise's beautiful home. Sad to leave.

Ann & Martin, Exeter

This is a really special B&B. Beautiful rooms, the most splendid breakfast and above all extremely charming housekeeper and owner. The highlight was breakfast on the terrace with views of Etna, made it very difficult to leave.

Kay, Penzance

This property is very special and possesses all of the wonderful features we have come to associate with Sawdays properties. The town is fascinating, lived in and very Sicilian with an interesting history, well located, friendly, hospitable, and just enough off the beaten track to avoid tourists looking for the more easily accessible selfie locations. Yet it is close enough to Isola Bella to drive for a swim and the sunset, to Etna to soak in the views and take an excellent recommended tour. Denise was a very good hostess and with her lovely assistant, Oksana, made our stay faultless. Lovely.

Lisa, Den Haag

We arrive stressed and exhausted from London and left relaxed and refreshed. We stayed in the 'standard' double room upstairs but it was deluxe in its huge bed, crisp linen, spotless ensuite and lovely views. We were welcomed with local cheese and delicious Etna prosecco on the sunny balcony looking at the amazing volcano and blue sky, the perfect start to the holiday. We enjoyed days trips up Etna which was breathtaking and to a local gorge. Wonderful.
