The
Experience

This cool little townhouse, hidden in a winding network of alleyways, puts you at the heart of all the glorious fuss of ancient Modica. Head out to imbibe the exuberance of its 17th-century Baroque architecture – impressive palaces, beautiful churches. It’s famous for its chocolate too.

The kitchen is well equipped, but no-one comes to this part of Sicily to cook for themselves. Just a few paces from the apartment there’s a fancy fish restaurant, a lively trattoria and the Focacceria Don Puglisi where you can taste the unmissable ‘scacce’ (delicious stuffed flatbread).

A welcome respite from the heat and hurly burly – sip a glass of something cool on the little terrace, read a book on the shaded courtyard, plan a trip to the coast. There are beaches within a 30-minute drive, Pozzallo has a blue flag award, Donnalucata is a quaint fishing village.

Location

The neighbourhood

Modica is a UNESCO heritage site – there are so many ornate churches, cathedrals, palaces and museums to visit you could be kept busy for days. You’re just behind the main Corso – a graceful avenue lined with restaurants, bars and boutiques. If you need beaches, 30 minutes’ drive puts you on the coast via charming Scicli. Ragusa, another Baroque jewel, is ten miles north. For the best ice cream in the world head to Noto, 45 minutes by car.

Introducing

Vincenzo Gianí

Helpful and enthusiastic ‘Modicana’ Elisa is on hand to welcome you and is only a phone call away if you have any problems. She speaks four languages, just in case your Italian isn’t up to scratch. The owners of the house live abroad, splitting their time between Guatemala and Argentina – there are a few artefacts on the walls that hint at their adventures.
