The Experience

This apartment has been restored with great care and attention to detail and could not be in a more privileged location. The main thoroughfare, the Corso Umberto, is a five-minute walk away as is Modica Alta where you’ll get a real feel for authentic local life.

Climb up steps to the side of the church and into a vine-covered walled courtyard; downstairs is the large foyer and the eat-in kitchen, and an exquisite staircase leads upstairs to the two bedrooms, a grand living space, a terrace and a balcony with views over the lower part of the city.
Modica centre is full of small restaurants and trattorias. You’re in one of the UNESCO towns of southern Sicily, with other cities notable for their Sicilian Baroque architecture such as Scicli, Noto and Ragusa within 45 minutes’ drive. Trains in Sicily are not the most regular but a direct service from Siracusa takes just under two hours.

Reviews

Rosalie's inviting and charming home with its rich muted colours, mix of antiques and creatively refurbished pieces is a gem. Her attention to detail and guest comfort is obvious. Then you have the location! Positioned next to the cathedral with the mesmerizing views over the lower part of the city from your own terrace. A marvelous base from which to explore the southern tip of the island.

Palazzetto Polara is a pretty unique experience. It is a beautifully positioned property within meters of the imposing Cathedral of S. Giorgio. Palazzetto Polara is a joy to stay at - with an imposing sitting room, great bathrooms, spacious bedrooms and a well equipped kitchen. There is both a downstairs terrace and a roof terrace furnished with chairs and tables. You are very much staying in a home rather than a property. Both Rosalie, and Lorenzo the concierge, were extremely helpful with great advice and tips to make the most of our visit.

We spent eight glorious days at Palazzetto Polara and the consensus opinion of our group is that there simply aren't enough superlatives to describe this Baroque beauty or its owner, Rosalie. While we have stayed in many rentals we consider Palazzetto Polara to be in class by itself. Walking into this historic treasure, we were immediately impressed by the sensitive approach to its renovation, as it lacked neither in character and charm nor in modern comforts and conveniences. Both bathrooms in the Palazzetto are modern and elegant in their design and functioned flawlessly during our stay.

My wife and I loved our 4-night stay here. It is simply spectacular, and we felt transported back in time--but with all the modern comforts. The ceilings were high, the furnishings were beautiful, and the stone, marble, and ceramic flooring was attractive. It is so nice that we had a hard time leaving the place each day to explore Modica or other nearby locations. The website's description and photographs are entirely accurate. Everything was provided for our stay, including tea, coffee, milk, fruit, fresh bread, and jam for breakfast.

Location

The neighbourhood

The Corso Umberto stretches for several kilometres and is lined with chocolate shops selling Modica’s famous dark chocolate with spices, as well as boutiques and restaurants. Antica Dolceria Bonaiuto has the best chocolate, Osteria dei Sapori Perduti is a simple trattoria with traditional recipes and Accursio is considered the best upscale restaurant in the city. Enoteca Rappa in Modica Alta is a wine bar with an excellent list.

Local points of interest from . Rosalie

  • Palazzetto Polara, the little palace, is the wing of the most famous aristocratic Palazzo in Modica, Palazzo Polara. To fully understand the importance of the Polara family one has to just look at its neighbor, San Giorgio Cathedral.
  • San Giorgio Cathedral is considered par excellence the most important Baroque church in Sicily. From the balcony and the terrace of Palazzetto Polara behold both the spectacular view of the city of Modica and the Cathedral itself.
  • In addition to the magnificent settings, Palazzetto Polara also offers concierge service as part of the rental fee.
  • To reach Palazzetto Polara one takes the stairs to the left of San Giorgio Cathedral and from there steps into the wondrous charm of the private and enclosed spacious courtyard. The courtyard features an alfresco dining area with table and chairs.
  • Known as the ''City of 100 bells and 100 churches'', Modica is a charming place to stay. Its architecture, food and scenic countryside make it a delightful place which visitors return to time and again.
  • The town is a maze of narrow streets and steps which join the honey colored stone buildings of Upper Modica with the lower valley. Although much of Modica's ancient history was destroyed in an earthquake in 1693, it was rebuilt in the Baroque period.
