Fifteen minutes from the charming resort of Selinunte is Villa Mimosa, surrounded by orange trees, olive groves and umbrella pines. The great thing is you can self-cater here and have B&B: lovely Jackie delivers local breads and pastries each morning. Three of the apartments stretch along the back and open onto a long pergola-shaded terrace and a garden bright with poppies in spring. The fourth apartment is on the first floor, with a balcony. Each is open plan, with a simple shower room and a kitchenette, homely spaces furnished with carved Sicilian armchairs, high antique beds, good linen. Jackie, who’s lived in Sicily for years (having managed to collect a fair few cats and dogs along the way!), is a sommelier and great enthusiast about food, and can organise wine-tastings. She also produces Villa Mimosa’s own organic olive oil, and guests are welcome to join in with the olive harvest. The main road that passes close by (some traffic hum) whisks you to medieval towns, nature reserves, great sand beaches… and the most beautiful temple site in Sicily, at Selinunte.
