The Experience

Drama from the mountains, deep peace from the lush plateaux – you have the best of everything here. Valley views climb to craggy peaks from every bedroom window and stars and silence wrap you up at night. The Grones family converted their B&B into an immaculate hotel in 2008 and the combination of Austrian efficiency and Italian bubbliness is unbeatable: personalised menus pop up at dinner, your waitress can guide you through the wine list, and if you think five courses a night will beat you – it won’t: every plate is light, fresh and totally irresistible. Take a digestif at the bar with other guests and you’ll be swapping tips on where to find the most powdery snow or magnificent view. Bedrooms are capacious, light and quiet; new bathrooms gleam. Walk downhill for five minutes and you’re in the centre of Ortisei, a sweet town famous for its wood carving, with shops for souvenirs and ski gear, and bars and cafés for excellent local wines and cream cakes. Above: a magical landscape, superb for skiing, cycling and hiking. Our inspector only heard one English voice on a whole week’s trip – and was enchanted.

Local points of interest from Nadia Grones-Feichter

  • The Dolomites UNESCO World Natural Heritage and the Alpe di Siusi, Europe's largest high altitude alpine meadow with fantastic 360° views and wondurful trekking walks
  • The Puez-Odle Natural Park: a very special place for nature lovers with many hiking trails, vie ferrate, high peaks and protected flower fields. The openly displayed rocksand layers showing the evolution of the Dolomites makes the nature park so unique
  • The Iceman on display at the South Tyrol Museum of Archeology in Bolzano (36 km from Ortisei away) is one of the world’s best-known and most important mummies. Don’t miss the historic district and arcades of Bolzano where old meets new!
  • Sella Ronda - the most recognized ski route of the Dolomites: It is a loop that runs either clockwise or counter clockwise around the massif of the Sella mountain range. This route can easily be accomplished in one day.
  • The world´s biggest handmade crib: larger than life-size-figures characterize this crib in Val Gardena, entirely wood hand carved.
  • The Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle in Merano: fantastic botanic gardens which include an area of 12 hectares: a journey across the flora of our planet. The Gardens have been awarded 2013 as International Garden of the Year
