The Experience

This good, solid house, built in the 50s, was originally a farmhouse with apple orchards – owner Adi was born here. Rent the whole house, or just the first-floor apartment (the ground-floor cannot be booked alone). There’s a very homely feel to both with pretty porcelain, glassware, delicate chandeliers and plenty of cushioned places to sit and read or doze, both inside and out. If you take the whole house you have direct access to the pretty garden, or a lovely balcony on the first floor.

Adi was a chef – he can give you a cookery lesson if you want – so both kitchens brim with serious kit and you’ll also find fancy biscuits, marmalade and a special local cordial – all homemade. The owners give you a guest card for free transport and museums.

Borrow bikes and head out to the river Adige. There are many good restaurants in nearby Lana, only a short drive from Gargazon.

Reviews

We stayed in the elegant and homely upstairs apartment and had a wonderful holiday. Eva and Adi are most generous and helpful hosts, providing detailed advice on planning our days, offerings from the delightful, shady and abundant garden and tasty treats from Adi’s kitchen. We only used public transport, which is efficient and covered by the the travel card, including local cable cars. The hiking is glorious on well-marked paths, for all levels of fitness with opportunities for delicious sustenance. We swam, cycled and visited local museums, but there is so much more, I can’t wait to return.

Kate, Edinburgh

A cosy, comfortable, home from home, with the added bonus of a warm welcome from Adi and Eva, is what awaits guests staying at Im Garten 9. Surrounded by a flowery garden, apple orchards and mountains in the pretty village of Gargazzone, this is the perfect base from which to explore the extraordinary South Tyrol region

Location

The neighbourhood

It's a five-minute walk to a food shop, a good butcher and a café with a garden. Walk 15 minutes through the orchards to a natural pool and a tennis court. An amazing castle, Trauttmansdorff, has a museum and lovely gardens, a 13-minute drive. There are lots of well marked walking and cycling paths with mountain views and castles. Michelin-starred restaurants abound for hearty Tyrolean specialities.

Local points of interest from Eva Andersag Thuile

  • Mount San Vigilio, reachable by cable car in just 5 minutes from Lana. The mountain at 1500m, ideal for the whole family
  • Walks on the "Waalwege" overlooking the vineyards, apple fields and surrounding mountains.
  • Merano, the spa town with a special charm - walks along the river, Sissi's path, the Tappeiner promenade
  • Take the cycle path to discover the culture, landscapes ... from the Resia pass to Lake Garda.
  • Trauttmansdorff Castle, twice the residence of Empress Sissi of Austria, is located in Merano's town center. The Trauttmansdorff Gardens in Merano, a 12-hectare park with a variety of plants and flowers.
  • A garden that I really like is the Kränzelhof garden. It offers a labyrinth, sculptures and a lot of serenity. The count's garden, also producer of excellent wines.

Introducing

Eva Andersag Thuile

Eva, who was born in nearby Lana, worked in hotels as a receptionist all around Italy. She loves sharing the house and garden with guests and will give plenty of local advice if you want it, but will otherwise leave you to enjoy your holiday.
