The Experience

All around are the soaring, craggy Dolomites – and if you feel overawed, you’ll be soothed on arrival. Manfred and Sonja – calm, elegant, intelligent – will be delighted to see you, and eager to do all they can to please. Though the building is young, it is a faithful reproduction of a 16th-century manor and blends in beautifully with the pretty village of Cortaccia (known as ‘Kurtatsch’ by the locals). Light roomy bedrooms, alpine-cosy with lots of pine and warmly carpeted, have blissful views to vineyards, orchards and mountains; each has a loggia, a balcony or access to the garden. This was Austria (the area turned Italian in 1919) and the hotel’s cuisine, served in the family restaurant opposite – a fascinating example of German Renaissance architecture – reflects this; it’s a tour de force of Italian and South Tyrolean dishes, and comes with a well-stocked bar: the perfect place to gather after a day’s hiking. Take a trip to Bolzano or Merano, go on a wine tour, rent bikes, play golf – there are three courses nearby. Return to sauna, steam room and lovely pool.

The Pomella family will spoil you in their cosy hotel not only with their delicious food and excellent wines but also with their insider knowledge of the area because it literally has everything; mountains, lakes, vineyards, castles, museums, bike trails and culture cities. And with the WinePass travel/discount card no need for the car either.

We stayed here in September, driving through France and Italy. This family run hotel was excellent. The rooms are spacious and very well appointed. Excellent shower with plenty of hot water. Excellent buffet breakfast, and inclusive terms give you a lovely 5 course dinner in the hotel. (You can opt in or out on a daily basis; there is a separate restaurant across the road if you want to eat a la carte.) Nothing is too much trouble for Sonia and Manfred, who made every effort to make our stay enjoyable. NB Mostly German is spoken in this part of Italy, but staff have decent English!
