Getting here is half the adventure. High on a hill find a dreamy villa – an ancient barn impeccably renovated – set in a gorgeous garden of lavender and rosemary and with the most stunning views from every angle. Up steps to walk into a large light sitting room with interesting art (owner Melinda has an excellent eye), antiques and plenty of space with enough comfy seating for everyone to sprawl; the kitchen has all the gear you need for cooking up a storm, there’s a big convivial table indoors and another outside on a covered terrace. Bedrooms are downstairs (two with direct access to your own parking space) and are very pretty with tiled floors, more antiques and modern, spotless bathrooms. Tempting to stay by the pool but it’s a short hop to Sansepolcro for market, shops, restaurants and Piero della Francesca’s famous work ‘The Resurrection’. Further afield there’s enough culture to sink a battleship. If you are a larger group ask Melinda about taking the big house below – quietly independent and facing the other way, but super if you want to invite absolutely everybody!
