The Experience

This 16th-century villa with magnificent gardens was the summer residence of the Occhini family – it’s one of the most fascinating estates in Tuscany. You’ll feel surrounded by beauty in this farmhouse hotel filled with antiques and fine paintings curated by the owner, Alexandra La Capria. You stay in one of seven suites so you can be as independent as you like, or join in with a cookery course, truffle hunting or wine tasting.

All the apartments have nice views over the grounds – discover secret gardens with sun loungers and canopied beds. You’ll also find a pool and solarium in the vineyard. Breakfast is laid out for you, in the garden if you prefer, and dinner can be ordered in advance – tasty seasonal and organic produce along with organic wines from the estate.

The entire estate is yours to wander and Arezzo is a 20-minute walk. The cathedral has painted vaulted ceilings and a 15th-century fresco of Mary Magdalene by Piero della Francesca. There is a good weekly food and clothes market here too and plenty of restaurants – at certain times of year you may join in with a festival.

We spent 6days at La Striscia and had a superb time. We stayed in Alaria, the most modest of the suits and it was charming (although don’t depend on cooking in the tiny kitchen). The restaurant is great and is popular with local people, not tourists. Everyone was incredibly friendly and helpful. We could not have asked for more.

The neighbourhood

A medieval tower, church steeple and 17th-century aqueduct, as well as a row of monumental cypresses surround you. The nearest town, Arezzo is quieter than Siena and Florence and is home to Roman antiquities, Renaissance masterpieces, medieval festivals and important churches. Its central location in the region makes it easy to explore Tuscany and good train routes mean big cities like Rome, Venice and Milan are within reach too.
