The Experience

Elevated above the Chiana Valley, a peaceful Tuscan farmhouse surrounded by acres of olive groves, fig and cherry trees. A generous welcome bottle of prosecco eases guests into the Italian good life. The old building had been left to ruin, but a careful restoration transformed its fortunes; a new stone façade, terracotta floors and beamed ceilings blend tradition with solid modern comfort. Through the wooden arched doors, interiors are cosy and rustic. Plump sofas surround an open fire, while checked curtains add a touch of English country style. A long table is great for sociable dinners in the kitchen, or you can eat al fresco beneath the pergola or impressively starry skies. Good-sized bedrooms are simple and fresh; some have garden views and one has an en-suite shower room. A terracotta terrace with a barbecue and outdoor seats frames the house, and there’s a gorgeous heated pool just beyond. Walks from the door head through olives, chestnut and oak woods where you might spot wild boar, foxes and porcupines. Hop in the car for a fix of history and culture in Florence, Siena or Montepulciano.

We had a wonderful visit! The house is in a very rural, tranquil location surrounded by the most beautiful olive trees. The views of the Val di Chiana are superb too! La Tartaruga is very comfortable, with all you need to have a relaxing break, including books and board games (and a television that receives english TV if you want to watch a world cup match, which some of our party did!). The pool was a delight and many hours were spent gently bobbing to and fro! There is a wealth of information about the area in the house including excellent restaurant recommendations.

This was a perfect place to stay for our family party. The house seems generous, comfortable and adaptable. The well equipped kitchen is ideal for cooking some of the delicious vegetables in season in April -broad beans, artichokes, asparagus etc! And there's even a few cookery leaflets in the well stocked book cases. The location is fabulous - set amidst its own olive trees and wild flowers, with wilder woods just beyond. Great for walks which were loved by all of us including an intrepid one year old.

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from David Evans

  • So many of Tuscany's most famous and beautiful places are within one hour of the house:
  • Florence, Siena, the hills and villages of Chianti, Arezzo, Cortona, Perugia, Montepulciano and the Casentino, whilst Orvieto and the stunning Assisi are only 15 minutes further and an easy drive.
  • Arezzo is a lovely town in its own right. It has fantastic frescoes by Piero della Francesca and other fine art works. After a hard morning of culture relax in the Piazza Grande with a coffee or beer.
  • There are also beaches and water sports on Lake Trasimeno - the scene of Hannibal's triumph over the Romans
