The Experience

This B&B is part of the Albergo Diffuso concept, which brings abandoned villages in Italy back to life. The apartments are down a cobbled path with houses on one side and terraced wild gardens on the other, and the restaurant forms the heart of the village.

Simona and her family love pampering guests. The copious breakfast buffet includes home-baked cakes, local cheeses, antipasti spiked with herbs, artisan bread and organic jam; lunch and dinner have an emphasis on home-grown, seasonal, organic fare. You’re welcome to pick fruit off the trees that surround every house and to help to yourself to vegetables from the garden too.

Read a book next to the fire in your cosy apartment or sit out in the lovely garden, which has olive trees and valley views; you also get your own keys to the vast infinity pool. Simona is happy to advise on local itineraries – visits to local dairies, artisan chocolate makers, olive oil mills and truffle hunts in season. Florence is an hour away.

Il Canto di Maggio is the kind of Sawday place that you always hope to find. For us it was perfect in every possible way - from Simona's excellent communications, to the beautiful breakfasts on the verandah, the most perfect swimming pool, quirky rooms, and fabulous suppers under the stars. We felt so completely welcome and it was the most wonderful place to relax and unwind. Without a doubt we will return. Thank you to everyone at Il Canto di Maggio for a very, very special place to stay.

Ali, Newchurch

This is a place where I would definitely like to spend some down time, wake up in the morning to the birds and crickets chirping, walk out of my little house in this characterful hamlet, pick a couple of apples from the tree outside my door and wander down to the breakfast terrace for a cappuccino and one of Simona's delicious cakes. There is a special energy here thanks to Simona's passion in everything she does, coupled by Mauro's dynamic cuisine (sign up for a class!). The province of Arezzo is open territory to off-track exploration and the Locanda is a perfect launching pad.

The neighbourhood

The B&B is in the tiny hamlet of Penna Alta, a ten-minute drive above the town of Terranuova Bracciolini; there are shops here for stocking up. It’s on the edge of Le Balze National Park, which has unusual rock formations that were painted by Leonardo di Vinci – he was born nearby, in Caprese. Although this is not your typical Tuscan destination, it’s equidistant to historic Arezzo with its monthly antique fair and the Chianti wine region. The thermal baths of Rapolano Terme are 45 minutes’ away.

Simona Quirini

Simona studied to be a vet but returned to develop the Albergo Diffuso concept in her home village, and she, her husband Michele and two children are very much involved in the community. Her father Mauro is the charming chef, stopping to speak to guests on his way to the kitchen, arms laden with veggies from the garden. Look out too for Qui Qui the domesticated goose, who is very much part of the household.
