The Experience

Reached via an ancient Etruscan road and seemingly in the middle of nowhere, this 17th-century hermitage is just a short hop from the unspoilt town of Monte San Savino. It’s possible this was once a monastery; it still oozes tranquility with earthy stuccoed walls, apple-green painted doors and windows, underfloor heating, an old stone staircase leading to a loggia and all topped by a ‘tower room’. The sitting and dining room area has an open fireplace, beautiful antique bookcase and French windows leading to the garden. Bedrooms are graceful with beamed ceilings, the master with its private loggia and reading room up in the tower. The kitchen is a convivial, homely space with another big table, and outside its door, the old brick oven – perfect for pizzas. There’s an ‘apartment’ too for overflow – much more basic in style but self-contained and cosy with a wood-burning stove. A simple unfussy garden is yours to explore, grassy areas shaded by large oaks and pines, 50 acres of woodland, a travertine surrounded saline pool and a wood-fired oven. Explore the town, visit Gargonza Castle or the medieval village of Lucignano.

Gorgeous villa in a spectacular setting. Decorated in a thoughtful and artistic way to an extremely high standard. Spacious and cool, perfect for our large family. The teenagers loved having their own on-suite bathrooms, such a joy for us too not to have to share! For us the highlight was having our own private terrace to enjoy a quiet drink in the evening at the end of a hot day.

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Sophie Wood

  • Villa L’Eremo is set in 50 acres of parkland, woods, olive groves and vineyards with an avenue of cypress trees, ideal for walking and exploring the hilly countryside. Our villa has been lovingly restored from a romantic ruin to an elegant house.
  • The walled hill town of Monte San Savino is 2 miles away and traces its origins to the Middle Ages. The town’s wonderful architecture reflects the influence of the Medicis and there are several restaurants, from smart to simple within a 5 mile radius.
  • Options for horse riding and Tennis are close; Bicycles may be rented in town; Winter skiing on the nearby slopes. Thousands of acres of forest surround us, with deer, wild boar, porcupine, hare and other wildlife.
  • We are close to Cortona, Siena and the extraordinary landscape of the Crete, as well as Florence, Pienza, Montepulciano and Montalcino. On the slopes of our local extinct volcano, Monte Amiata, there are thermal springs, and beautiful monasteries.
  • Local vineyards offer wine tastings and the opportunity to purchase quality Chianti wine. Market day in Monte San Savino offers fresh local produce artisanal cheese, honey and truffles.
  • Classic dishes include: Pici al Aglione (hand made pasta, garlic sauce) Tagliata di Manzo (sliced steak), Spaghetti con Cinghiale (pasta with wild boar). Local pizzerias (nearest -walking distance) offer wood-fired pizzas and gluten-free options.
