The Experience

Gaze on a landscape that hasn’t changed since Leonardo’s day. The 600-year-old farm sprawls across undulating hills five minutes from da Vinci’s home town, surrounded by olive groves, vineyards and gorgeous views.

Francesco the owner lives in the smaller rough-hewn farmhouse, and guests in the recently restored other. Living areas and a breakfast room spread across the ground floor; apartments, suites and bedrooms are upstairs and down. Wake to a feast of meats, fruits and homemade jams and flans from delightful Marina, manager and cook. Then pad down the paths that lead to the pool.

You can hop into Vinci for ‘real Italy’, and to Anciano for Leonardo’s birth place. Empoli (12km) offers trains to Florence, Lucca and Sienna. In the evenings, good simple food awaits down the track, at a restaurant you can walk to.

Location

The neighbourhood

In this wilder corner of Tuscany, hiking and cycling trails abound. The hilltop town of Vinci (4km) - which, in 2019, celebrates the 500th anniversary of Leonardo’s death - runs festivals throughout the year, and three museums that celebrate his life... history buffs will marvel at his feats. The Chianti Montalbano wine region produces rustic red wines and is famous for its olive oils too.

Local points of interest from Marina Martinelli

  • Vinci is Leonardo’s birthplace and where he got his first inspirations for his studies and art. The museum gathers one of the most comprehensive collections about Leonardo’s interests. Not far one can visit his native home
  • Florence is only 40km away, so it’s within easy reach (by train as well). Close by are also Lucca and its walls and squares and the newly restored royal villa. Pistoia , il Borgo di San Miniato
  • Chianti wine, oil and flavours route winds through a vast area characterised by vineyards, olive trees, picturesque hamlets and historical wine cellars.
  • We are very close to the Montecatini & Monsummano thermal baths , perfect for a perfect well-being and relaxing day
  • The 9-hole golf course of Bellosguardo is only 1 km from our place
  • Mountain bike along the country roads that flank vineyards and olive trees with or without a guide

Introducing

Marina Martinelli

Owner Francesco, now very busy in the wine trade, has engaged Marina Martinell to take on day-to-day management. In 2018 she and her husband Enzo moved from the Dolomites, where they ran a successful restaurant-hotel for 28 years. Marina will be arranging wine tastings, offering aperitifs by the pool, and creating delicious breakfasts for B&B guests - and simple lunches on request.
