The Experience

A medieval farm expertly restored by charming Assunta and Stefano who, being Italian, have a flair for this sort of thing. You are immersed in greenery yet half an hour from Florentine bustle. The views on the road to Fiesole are stunning; Stefano will ferry you around neighbouring villages in his mini-van, or you could hire mountain bikes and take one of Assunta’s wonderful picnic baskets with you. For lazier days, the wonderful pool beckons. The log-fired sitting room sets the tone: the casa has a warm, Tuscan feel, and bedrooms open off a landing with a brick-walled ‘garden’ in the centre – all Stefano’s work. Two have four-poster beds dressed in Florentine fabric, all have polished wooden floors and pretty views, some onto the gardens where Stefano grows his herbs and vegetables. You are 500 metres above sea level so… no need for air conditioning, no mosquitoes! Breakfast on seasonal fruits and Assunta’s tasty scrambled eggs; dine on delicious Tuscan food. There is also an excellent restaurant up the road.

Simple, rustic, beautiful and friendly. Stefano and Assunta were lovely. We didn’t always understand each other but that didn’t seem to matter! Although different from the rolling countryside of chianti it’s charm and beauty is still captivating. Dinner and pasta making a must. Book in advance. Restaurant up the hill fantastic. Garden glorious in autumn. Pool not heated. Would definitely stay again. Thank you both.

We arrived by public transport with two rucksacks. It is an incredible place with amazing hosts. Firenze is a short bus ride and a reliable service. Our kind hosts offered to take us by car to Fiesole for our journey home to Firenze. The gardens and pool are a tranquil place to sit and read. Dinner was prepared by Assunta and Stefano in the garden by candlelight, drinking wine, chatting to other guests - a beautiful experience and a wonderful oasis of calm, with a hammock by the pool to relax in the shade. If looking for TV, high speed internet, a phone signal, this is not the place for you.

Very rustic and peaceful setting with wonderful hosts, Assunta and Stefano - cooking class was brilliant, traditional local dishes. We were looking for something which would give us access to Florence and other Tuscan sites and would highly recommend Casa Palmira.

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Assunta & Stefano Mattioli

  • We are just 16 km from the Renaissance city of Florence.
  • Visit the small town of Fiesole, once the earliest Etruscan settlement in the Florentine area and later a Roman town, with its theatre, basilica and archaeological park - just 8km away.
  • A delightful one-hour walk leads to the Sanctuary of Montesenario, one of the most important monasteries in Tuscany dating from 1200. Magnificent views southward over the hills and valleys surrounding Florence and northward over the Mugello.
  • Visits to nearby Medici Gardens and Villas and the Villa Demidoff Park at Pratolino.
  • Casa Palmira offers traditional cuisine and cooking lessons on how to make fresh pasta with wholegrain flour, sourdough bread, jams and conserves.
