Astonishingly good value in the historic centre – and what a cheerful place to be. Walking into Johanna I is like walking into your own classically furnished Florentine apartment… welcoming, cosy, safe and warm, with antiques, art, books and a nice desktop computer for all to use. Owner Lea has several other residenze — such a success that she and Johanna opened this one, in a 19th-century palazzo shared with notaries and an embassy. Take the lift or marble stairs to a smiling reception on the first floor: the staff are charming, approachable and keen to make your stay a happy one. Graceful arches, parquet floors and soft colours give a feeling of light and space to the corridors, classical music quietly plays, coffee, tea and nibbles are left out all day, and there are books and guides to browse. Bathrooms are stylish, bedrooms airy and cool, silk beautifies beds (some are four-posters) and adds to the feeling of elegance and charm. There’s a new breakfast room, too. Slip out to a café for something tasty before wandering off to San Lorenzo market, Piazza della Signoria, the Duomo.
