La Maddalena Alta

Porto Santo Stefano, Grosseto

White beaches, turquoise waters and a cliff-perched pool… the hum of the crickets, the lapping of the waves, Tuscany by the sea!

5 bedrooms

Sleeps 9

Where else would you find a mountain surrounded by ocean attached to the mainland by a strip of land, and a magical view of two islands? Monte Argentario is the most spectacular piece of coastline along the Tyrrhenian Sea. Escaping the tourist crowds of Porto Ercole and Porto Santo Stefano, Isabella and Roberto named their paradise La Maddalena after the striking ancient watch tower at the edge of the property. It’s a huge adventure to get here: the road twists and turns through hills strewn with brush, broom, cypress and pine to a steep rugged track and a breathtaking arrival. You’re high above the crashing waves in a wild landscape, with stunning sea views. You stay in a stone cottage, beautifully restored and not another building in sight. The Inside is simple, cosy and well-equipped with terracotta floor tiles and mosquito nets over beds. Bask in your own sparkling pool and private outdoor space, be adventurous and scramble downhill for 15 minutes to a private pebble beach and clear waters. Impossible to leave? There are pine forests to explore, coves to swim, seafood to delight in, and ferries to the Isle of Giglio.

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Isabella Melodia

  • La Maddalena is the ideal choice for those who need a relaxing time in an isolated location surrounded by nature in a romantic atmosphere. It's really a special place to stay, mentioned by The Times (2016) among of the top 50 secret villas in the Medd.
  • The fishing village of Porto Santo Stefano and Porto Ercole, both within a short (15-20 minutes) drive of the property, offer wonderful waterside restaurants where you can watch the sun set while feasting on freshly caught fish and superb Tuscan wine.
  • The Feniglia, an amazing long fine sandy beach in a natural park, is about 15 minutes from Porto S.Stefano. Here you can rent bicycles and run the pine forest that separates the lagoon of Orbetello from the sea, and arrive in the wildest part of the beach.
  • If you prefer sun umbrellas and sunbeds, the two edges of the beach are equipped for this, you can also rent small sailboats or simply relax and enjoy the best spaghetti with local clams at the best beach restaurant "Braccio”.
  • The ancient village of Porto Ercole is a picturesque sea village rich in towers and medieval fortresses. Daily trips to the medieval towns of Tuscania, Capalbio, Magliano, Pitigliano are advisable or by ferry to the crystal waters of the Island of Giglio.
  • or you can organise a daily trip to one of the most beautiful cities of Tuscany, Siena, Florence, Pisa …. and come back home in the evening. But normally our guests never move from home because here they find everything they need.
