The Experience

Where else would you find a mountain, surrounded by crystal clear sea, attached to the mainland by two strips of beach and a town in the centre, plus magical views of two islands? This is the wildly romantic and peaceful side of the promontory, so those in need of rest and to be immersed in nature will be very happy. To reach this little piece of paradise you climb high up a rugged narrow road through olive, pine, broom and juniper while the waves crash about below you.

The cottage is light and airy, with a good kitchen (basics for cooking provided, bottle of wine waiting and you can pre-order groceries), lots of space for sitting inside or out and a deliciously shady vine-covered pergola for al fresco meals gazing at the mesmerising views. Float in the infinity pool or scramble downhill for a private pebble beach and a refreshing swim.

Nod off under a mosquito net, listening to the sea, feeling very lucky.

Reviews

From the minute you step foot on the property, the sense of wellness pervades and of being in a very unique spot. Nature lovers, hikers, meditators and readers will rejoice. With regenerating elements as silence, starry nights, mesmerizing sea and rocky coast views, it is very difficult to stray from the place. Roberto and Isa are discreet hosts, leave guests on their own but present for any needs. Truly unique.

Nicole, Sawday's Inspector

Beautiful, serene place and a comfortable villa. If you want to chill this is the place to be.

Hugh, Canterbury

La Maddalena Bassa is a wonderful and very peacful place. Remote but still close to everything we needed to make our holiday perfect. Many thanks to Roberto and Isa for their warm hospitality, we will come back for sure!

Marco, Zurich

The villa's position is so stunning, very isolated and restful. We lovely going down to the cove like mountain goats, and being rewarded by a swim in the sea. The pool is perfect for a family with youngish children, and the views are mesmerising.

Helen, London

A truly wonderful place. The pool it is an absolutely magical spot both day and night, although it feels a bit odd at first as it is kind of a massive paddling pool but, within seconds, you get used to it. Many different options for where to sit in the sun and in the shade with amazing views from all of them. Note that you only get limited quantities of dishwasher tablets and toilet paper so stock up before arrival Possibly the best place we've stayed at.

Mark, Brighton

A glorious location, endlessly breathtaking views from terrace or poolside whatever the time of day. A very warm welcome from the owners who have created a simple yet chic holiday house which takes full advantage of the sun, sea and lush palm filled garden. A small corner of paradise.

Bridget, Oxford

This place is truly a slice of paradise, and lives up to every expectation. Thank you for having us to stay.I love the way you've done the place, so stylish but also very relaxed. And the views are just to die for. Watching the moonlight reflect on the sea last night was sublime. And we were intrigued by the menus on the wall in the kitchen from Whitby and Ripley. We know both Ripley and Whitby well so that made us feel right at home! Our boys have literally not stopped smiling since we drove onto the island yesterday. Suranjith's been great and made us feel very welcome.

Jennifer

You must think us stark staring mad! How could we avoid having a lovely time at such a perfect and glorious place? Thank you very much indeed. A genuinely different and precious location. The girls bounced around and happily entertained themselves whilst we read, ate and gazed out at the sea doing as little as possible. For that alone we should thank you. I think I read four books, three of which are on your shelves. We particularly enjoyed how you have arranged the property - simple and easy to relax in but also charming to look at, very comfortable and a pleasure to remember.

Location

The neighbourhood

The most spectacular piece of coastline along the Tyrrhenian Sea, far away from crowds. The town of Porto Santo Stefano has many trattorias and seafood restaurants and is also where you catch a ferry to the islands. A bit further is the Giannella Beach for stunning sunsets and a restaurant. Hire bikes and cycle through the pine reserve of Feniglia, hike Mount Argentario for a convent with views.

Local points of interest from Isabella Melodia

  • La Maddalena is the ideal choice for those who desire a truly relaxing, romantic holiday in an isolated location surrounded by sea, mountain and Mediterranean brush. It's really a special place as mentioned by The Times (2016) Top 50 secret villas in the Med
  • The fishing villages of Porto Santo Stefano and Porto Ercole, both within a short (15-20 min) drive of the property, offer a variety of seaside restaurants where you can watch the sun setting while feasting on freshly caught fish and superb Tuscan wine.
  • The Feniglia, a l7km sandy beach lined by a nature reserve, is 15 minutes from Porto S.Stefano. Here you can rent bicycles and breeze through the pine forest that separates the lagoon of Orbetello from the open sea, arriving at the wildest part of the beach.
  • If you prefer umbrellas and sunbeds of a beach club where you can also rent small sailboats and enjoy the best spaghetti with local clams at the beach restaurant "Braccio” on Feniglia beach
  • The ancient port of P.Ercole is a picturesque sea village rich in towers and medieval fortresses. Day trips to the medieval towns of Tuscania, Capalbio, Magliano, Pitigliano are highly recommended or a ferry to the crystal waters of the Island of Giglio
  • You can even organise a day trip to one of the classic Tuscan cities of Siena, Florence, Pisa ….and come back home in the evening although normally our guests never move from home because here they find everything they need.

Introducing

Isabella Melodia

Roberto and Isabella (avid sailors and nature lovers) are from Rome. Handy Roberto, an engineer, enjoys building, repairing, gardening and practically doing everything himself. They bought the 10-hectare property many years ago and still visit it with their family. They live nearby and are on hand if you need anything.
