Step off the ferry into bustling Portoferraio and wend your way (three kilometres) up to this colourful home, lovingly tended by its three owners who live in part of the house and are there to welcome you. Unpack in a pretty bedroom – two have terraces, others face the sea – and ease yourself into island life.Borrow a book from the groaning shelves in the living room and find a sheltered spot to read, then explore the huge garden packed with fragrant plants, olive groves, tall pines and interesting sculptures. Walk to a fish restaurant for lunch or hire a scooter to zip around; head to Capo Bianco and Le Ghiaie beaches for sunbathing and snorkelling. Hike up Monte Capanne if you’re feeling energetic or cheat and take the chairlift.Return to bubble away in the Jacuzzi, Aperol spritz in hand. Whip up a feast in the well-stocked kitchen and gather your clan around the long terrace table under glowing Thai lanterns for a hearty dinner. You may help yourself to fresh veg from the owners’ garden or arrange to have supper cooked for you.
