The Experience

Lucca’s amphitheatre was built on Roman remains with houses built organically into its ancient walls. The first storey of three such houses comprises this small B&B – woven into one they make an irresistible whole – and if the position is special then the place itself is even more so, thanks to the generosity and graciousness of your hosts.

Alex and Livia love their new enterprise and go out of their way to make your stay perfect. All is warm, elegant and cosy; original terracotta floor tiles beautifully waxed, pictures prettily hung, ceiling beams gloriously chunky. An old stone sink planted with succulents defines the reception space, a coffee table is laden with travel books, striped armchairs wait to be sunk into, and two little tables are laid with breakfast’s fresh fruits and homemade cakes, pastries and jams.

Stay a week; for history, beauty, music, churches, and the lovely seaside from Cinque Terre to the Maremma.

Our stay at B&B Arena was superb. Everyone was helpful and friendly. Alex ensures that everything is perfect. Our room was lovely and quiet, despite the B&B being part of the amphitheatre, and it was cleaned daily. Breakfast was a delicious healthy offering of yogurt, fruit, nuts and muesli with coffee and there were many pleasant touches, such as the honesty bar. Thank you for a great stay.

Staying here is an exceptional experience for the combination of comfort, history and charm offered by generous hosts. Cosy rooms look right onto one of Tuscany's most attractive piazzas. Alex will take his time giving you insider tips which you can take right down the stairs, passing through Roman walls, wow! Lucca's core is loaded with art, music and architecture and it's virtually car-free.

What a delightful place! Charming hostess, Livia, who went out of her way to provide us with an excellent holiday & couldn't have been more helpful. The location was brilliant, the restaurants she recommended exceptional, & we found the whole experience of being right in the centre of a fascinating walled city most enjoyable. We will definitely try to return.

We could not have had a nicer experience while staying at The B & B Arena in Lucca. The location is perfect, walking distance to everything and tucked inside the walls of Lucca. Our room was very comfortable and attractive. We had windows opening up to the square and tall beamed ceilings. Each room is unique. Alex and Livia were absolutely wonderful and helped us in so many ways; from transportation & shopping to dining. It is now one of our favorite places to have stayed in and hope that we can return again soon. We could not have felt more welcome.

The neighbourhood

You’ll be oh so happy wandering the cobbled streets of Lucca; the winding city walls provide a dramatic backdrop for delicious bread and parma ham picnics. Take a short walk from your room; climb the Guinigi Tower and sit among the oak trees. You’re an hour from Florence and all that comes with it, just 35 minutes from the seaside and even closer to a handful of extraordinary villas and gardens.

  • B&B Arena is a testament to Lucca's rich heritage, in authentic Tuscan decor inside Roman walls and archways dating back to 171AD.
  • The perimeter of today's Piazza dell'Anfiteatro is the same as that of the 10,000 seat Roman Arena where gladiators and wild animals entertained the Romans.
  • Lucca is strategically positioned to make intra day excursions to Florence, Pisa, San Gimignano, Cinque Terre and many other destinations in the wine country or on the seaside.
  • Lucca has a very active entertainment calendar throughout the year including: Puccini music recitals and operas, today's world famous vocalists and music stars throughout the July festival, Comics&Games festival, antique and food markets.

Many years of an open doors policy in their own home, Alex and Livia wanted to extend their hosting skills to friends they hadn’t met yet. You’ll be glad they did - breakfast time in the kitchen is a real family vibe. Alex and Livia transformed this family property, creating a relaxed setting for your adventures. Ask them for their favourite spots to sip Aperols and munch on Lucchese goodies.
