The Experience

Along winding lanes among olive groves and on the hillside of a lush green valley, this 17th-century villa and farmhouse have been in Ben’s family for 20 years and he’s restored the buildings with the utmost care, creating the atmosphere of a well loved home. The airy drawing room is welcoming with its antique furniture, rugs and wall hangings, the library cosy with its armchairs and book-lined walls. Comfy bedrooms are filled with treasures and have spotless en suite bathrooms. Once you’ve breakfasted on the terrace you could simply relax, but there’s much to tempt you away from the poolside; painting and sculpture courses, yoga and cooking classes, a baby grand piano to play, outdoor pizza cookery, home cinema, table tennis and football. Lucca is a 20-minute drive away and you can rent Ben’s 1970s sports car and whizz down to Forte dei Marmi on the coast, before returning for dinner and a glass of wine under the pergola.

Reviews

We recently had the pleasure of staying at Casa Berti for a 10 day artist retreat. My husband enjoyed the plein air and studio painting while I relaxed after 2 weeks of busy sightseeing in Italy. The accommodations were very comfortable, the views were fantastic, and the food was so delicious. Ben made us feel right at home. We would love to return in the future and bring some of our family.

I've taught 4 artist retreats at Casa Berti...3 back to back in 2019 (3 weeks) and 1 ten day in October 2021. Ben is an amazing, friendly host and very accommodating, and has become family to us! I absolutely love and adore Casa Berti. The rooms are comfortable and beautifully designed and decorated, and the views looking out into the valley are to die for! When at Casa Berti, we felt rejuvenated, relaxed, and inspired. It's a wonderful place to be, you won't regret it! We'll be back again!

Perfectly situated, we found a little paradise on earth! A home wrapped in the clean and fresh scent of forest air, in endless views, in nature and its quietness with its wonderful songs of crickets and the "hoot" of a passing owl at night... Casa Berti is a lot by itself but thanks to the Gooder family and their passion for it and its history, you can feel that it has a soul, a peaceful and happy soul. Thank you Ben for your warm welcome and your hospitality, you made us feel at home with friends. Very hard to say goodbye but looking forward to coming back soon. Arrivederci

Having holidayed with Sawday’s for over 20 years, we knew it would be good but Casa Berti exceeded all our expectations. The Palazzo itself delivered on all counts – welcoming and comfortable but with wonderful style and panache. The glorious views over the mountains from the sunny terraces with their potted lemon trees and the silvery olive groves were awesome and breathtaking. The utter peace was overwhelming . We arrived stressed and burnt out but Casa Berti’s magic and Ben’s care and kindness sent us home refreshed, restored and revitalized. We can’t wait to return!

Truly a delight. The house has the most breathtaking views, and is in a great position for enjoying the delights of Tuscany - not that we did this! Bewitched by the fire, the comfort of the salon, the delicious wine and intoxicating company, we hardly felt the need to leave. If we could have stowed away in the cupboards forever then we would have! Fed with delight by Debs, great breakfasts at our leisure, advice on local eateries and walks, and sparkling conversation... it will be hard to keep us away. xx

This place is so special. A tranquil Tuscan Palazzo steeped in history that overlooks unspoilt hills for as far as the eye can see. This is more than just another hotel/villa, it really is an inspiringly tranquil haven away from the masses. Huge pool that shares the grounds with the olive and pear trees. We stayed two nights and left feeling part of the family. Ben, the owner, is a charming character who couldn't do more for you to savour the stay. This was the best place by far in our Italian travels and I simply couldn't recommend it more.

You approach Casa Berti by winding up through olive groves and vineyards. When you get there it is a wonderful place with views to die for. The house is typically Tuscan with all that you need as well as use of the pool which has amazing views too. Ben is a great host and Lucca is a wonderful place too. We would thoroughly recommend it.

Local points of interest from Ben Gooder

  • Casa Berti and its environs are home to an abundance of flora and fauna. Don't be surprised to see wild boar, eagles, Hoopoes in the garden, porcupine, edible door mice, owls, woodpeckers, pine martins, salamanders, and a huge variety of songbirds.
  • Thanks to its dominant position and views the villa was HQ for the American Army in the Second World War. Castelaccio, a ruined church, seen from the property, is a war memorial to the Buffalo Soldiers. Take the Gothic Line tour in my original Willys Jeep
  • Until this century Casa Berti was home to the local priest. The small chapel attached to the villa is ideal for a wedding or vows renewal.
  • A huge working artists' studio is available to paint, draw and sculpt in, either under tuition or alone.
  • Expect delicious food using fresh local produce, some estate grown. We produce the finest extra virgin olive oil and limoncello.
  • Extensive woodland walks abound through ancient chestnut forest. Bring a bike or take a hike.
