The
Experience

At the end of its private track, among olive groves not far from Lucca, this old farmhouse is neatly divided into five bright, pristine apartments: three ground-floor, the others two-storey. Each has a different layout; all have open-plan living areas, modern kitchens and shower rooms, terracotta tiled floors and chestnut beamed ceilings, art from local markets and a mix of antique finds and practical contemporary pieces. The feel is uncluttered, in a stylish way. TV-free bedrooms have good linen, firm mattresses and rolling countryside views; a few have double glass doors onto the garden, some have beds that ‘float’ in the middle of the room… Outside there’s plenty of well-tended lawn space, with shady trees and a large – five by 12 metre – pool for guests to share. Or simply pull on your boots and go hiking from the door; the Garfagnana region’s National Parks have some of the best trails in Italy. This is a great place for groups; ask super-helpful Jim if you’d like an English-speaking caterer or tips on seeing Tuscany by train; children love the Pinocchio Park in Collodi.

Reviews

This was our first visit to Italy for the 4 of us, and it couldn't have been more pleasant. Greeted by our host Jim who had helped with numerous arrangements beforehand, we were immediately amazed with the apartment, its decor, cleanliness, kitchen, and amenities. The location is gorgeous, with rolling countryside, the pool, walking trails, olive groves and vineyards. A very brief car ride to a number of small villages, restaurants, churches and more. This was the most relaxing vacation we've ever had. Even the kids (teenagers) had a great time. We'll be back.

What a place! We were 3 couples, and because of the set up here, we were able to rent 3 separate units, providing couple time as well as group time hanging around the fabulous pool and cooking meals in the very well-equipped kitchens. A historic building with cool, contemporary interiors - beautiful combination! Apartments were sparkling clean and comfortable, with top-of-the-line bedding, towels, etc. We loved the location - could walk to a little village up the hill or drive to Lucca, Florence, Tuscan hill towns. Jim is a knowledgable, generous, accommodating host. We will be back! .

The welcome from the English owner was just the start of a pleasant week at Il Borghetto. Very peaceful, relaxing and with an amazing panoramic view, especially when the sun was setting. The place is well furnished and comfortable, feels really like a home rather than a rental place. A good swimming pool completed the set up and overall we had a fantastic week (last week in June). Perfect for day trips to many Tuscan villages and locations, well known and hidden in the hills. Many thanks!!

Lucca landscapes have brought us back to this area in the last 4 years, and our recent stay at "Il Borghetto" has confirmed why this has become an outstanding experience. The warm welcome from Jim and Debbie included a beautiful basket of local foods that set the tone for our stay. We loved the rustic elegance of the beautiful restoration, the warm radiating tile floors that met our feet each morning, and the window views looking out at the Lucca valley was like a picture waiting to be painted! Did we mention the beautiful kitchen, the modern bathrooms and peaceful location? Delightful

Great location for a relaxing stay and to celebrate our 55th and 56th anniversaries. Jim K. is a great host with many good suggestions as to what to do and see. Il Borghetto is a super property with a swimming pool, olive trees, and great hiking trails within walking distance. Our apartment was well furnished and user friendly. Beautiful Lucca is twenty min. away by car. Pisa and Florence are easily accessible. Great food and wines are nearby.

  • Watch our aerial video tour of il Borghetto in San Gennaro. Just go to YouTube and search for il Borghetto in San Gennaro.
  • We are ideally situated mid-way between Pisa and Florence. The Pescia train station, 10 minutes away with free parking, can take you to Pisa, Florence, the Cinque Terra and more.
  • Our local wines from Montecarlo and the Lucca hills are becoming more famous every day. We can arrange wine tours and tastings with wineries just 15 minutes away. Some will even let you help them pick the grapes in September!
  • Club Alpina d'Italia does a great job marking hiking trails throughout our hillsides. The hiking path up to the historic village of San Gennaro goes right past our front door!
  • Our monthly antique market in Lucca on the third weekend of each month finds all the major squares and piazzas filled with linens, silver, china, furniture and more.
  • Our local knowledge can help make your holiday hassle free. We can pre-book an entry time for you to see The David in Florence, so you can skip the queue. Great restaurants, wine tours, opera and other musical events are all waiting for you.
