At the end of its private track, among olive groves not far from Lucca, this old farmhouse is neatly divided into five bright, pristine apartments: three ground-floor, the others two-storey. Each has a different layout; all have open-plan living areas, modern kitchens and shower rooms, terracotta tiled floors and chestnut beamed ceilings, art from local markets and a mix of antique finds and practical contemporary pieces. The feel is uncluttered, in a stylish way. TV-free bedrooms have good linen, firm mattresses and rolling countryside views; a few have double glass doors onto the garden, some have beds that ‘float’ in the middle of the room… Outside there’s plenty of well-tended lawn space, with shady trees and a large – five by 12 metre – pool for guests to share. Or simply pull on your boots and go hiking from the door; the Garfagnana region’s National Parks have some of the best trails in Italy. This is a great place for groups; ask super-helpful Jim if you’d like an English-speaking caterer or tips on seeing Tuscany by train; children love the Pinocchio Park in Collodi.
