The Experience

After four miles of narrow twisting road, crossing the Turrite in a few thrilling places, you arrive at the lively village of Fabbriche di Vallico: 350 inhabitants, four restaurants, a few working mills and, over one last rickety bridge, an Augustinian monastery carved out of the forested mountain side. Here live artists Steven and Lindsay who for the last seven years have been restoring monastery and church with a meticulous, exquisite simplicity. Floors are flagged and oak planked, chestnut beams are sturdy, stone walls naked, and furniture minimal. In the adjoining deconsecrated church is a galleried library to delight you, and creative courses are held below – ceramics, glass, Italian cookery… and sometimes jazz concerts, recitals and informal cinema screenings. The saltwater infinity pool is a joy, as are the bedrooms, one with a steep stair to a sky-lit platform; sleep beneath the stars. Expect sprung mattresses, small windows, Muji linen, and en suite bathrooms, two with tubs – “for the English”! Delicious, organic breakfasts are served at the long table.

This was our first major stop on a road trip across Italy. It is not the easiest place to reach, but the effort was amply repaid. Steve has expended considerable thought and effort in resurrecting an Augustinian monastery and reimagining its original purpose in the modern age. If you crave tranquility after a long slog through COVID, then this should be high on your list of places to visit. This was one of the best bed and breakfasts that I have ever stayed at.

I Romiti is a simply beautiful place. Visiting in October, we had lovely sunshine with stunning views down the hillside and local porcini and chestnuts. Steven is a brilliant host. His cooking, along with the delicious wine, is fantastic and highly recommended. There are hillside walks on the doorstep and other interesting places to visit nearby but it was also lovely to just relax in this wonderful, peaceful setting.

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Steven Newell

  • Breakfast - Poiani ,majestic local birds of prey ,circle languidly overhead whilst below them House Martins work the air currents to compete for that impossible perch. Cacophony of bells from the goats grazing the terraces, surprising the odd pheasant.....
  • For the athletic, mountain or road biking, riding, walking and climbing, kayaking and canyoning are all nearby . Mountain guides can be arranged for walks for all levels. Walk across the valley to our neighbour Martino and meet his pet wild boar- awesome.
  • We are an hour from the small ski resort of Abetone -excellent for family skiing . Return home to log fires, vin brule followed by a great evening meal in the historic surroundings of our restored 13th century church ,rounded off with a movie on the wall .
  • There are lots of transport options for a day in Lucca, Florence or Pisa -travel the picturesque single track railway winding along the valley of the Serchio River. Barga and Bagni di Lucca are even closer for culture and time taking the waters at the spa.
  • Here in the Garfagnana eating is taken very seriously. We have a fabulous selection of locally produced hams, salamis ,sausages and cheeses, ottofile polenta, chestnut honey and grain beers. You can visit the nearby vineyards of Monte Carlo and Matraia.
  • If you really don't want to venture further and feel like acquiring a new skill ,we have a Ceramic and Glass Studio on site and a programme of workshops in everything from Felting to Creative Writing and Yoga- courses will be posted on the website.
