Step from the door and into the forest: your forest. Cool glades of pines, oaks and holm oaks surround this sunny-coloured Tuscan farmhouse, part of the Salviati family’s private estate. The green-shuttered, gamekeeper’s house has been converted into spacious apartments, retaining rustic simplicity with a dash of elegance. Pietra serena staircases lead to bedrooms of terracotta tiles and rugs, pine furnishings and pretty bedcovers. Painted headboards and old family trunks add character. Plenty of bathrooms, too. The large downstairs living area is jolly with colourful lightshades and blinds, an open fire and a farmhouse kitchen – marble counter, curtained shelves – neat but with all essentials. Doors lead to private, wisteria-covered pergolas; perfect for outside dining overlooking gardens and forest. Take the path through the pines to the beach (4km), visit nearby Lucca and Pisa or spot deer and wild boar in the woods, part of Migliarino Natural Park. Cook supper in the outside bread oven, or let the cheerful Albanian caretakers treat you. Sit back and drink in the peace of this forest hideaway.
