The
Experience

The restoration of this old farm has created a pretty cluster of weathered stone dwellings with wide and lovely views over thickly wooded hills. The garden is mostly laid to grass with olive and acacia trees, lavender borders and higgledy old walls topped with pots of geraniums. The ingenious saline swimming pool is a delight; it could be hard to leave its side – perhaps just for the ten minute stroll along the medieval walled lane for lunch in Ciciano? You can help yourself from charming Gianna’s vegetable plot and each apartment has a decent kitchen. Casa Ada and Gualdi are on one floor, Casa Erina is on two, in the former hay barn. Bedrooms are traditional and simple with rosy pink or yellow walls, modern floor tiles, dark wood furniture, wrought-iron beds – it’s more about being out and about here. It’s easy to visit Siena, Florence and San Gimignano; you’re only an hour from the coast and there’s stacks to do locally: visit the ruined abbey of San Galgano, go biking, hiking or riding, or try a spot of speleology in the ancient mineral and metal mines of the Colline Metallifere – this is a beautiful area.

Reviews

Wonderfully tranquil and relaxing place, set in incredibly beautiful surroundings. Fantastic rain water pool with views out into the valley of nothing but woodland and mountains. Lovely walk through olive groves, along a herb strewn path to the local village. Very welcoming and friendly host with a wealth of local knowledge and advice. We had a fantastic holiday and would greatly recommend it.

This is the second time we have stayed at the Podere di Santa Maria. The accommodation is excellent, well maintained and overall it is a lovely spot with a good pool. If you want to hear silence this is the place to chill out. Giana is an excellent host. Fresh bread is delivered every morning as requested and Giana is very helpful with advice and booking restaurants. Not forgetting of course Giana's mum's cake. This is a five star place and we will be back.
