Admire the view from the pool – both are stunning. This is a magical place; a soft green lawn edged with Mediterranean shrubs slopes down to the pool, a covered terrace overlooks medieval Volpaia. (Some of the best chianti is produced here; the village itself is a 20-minute walk.) The house vibrates with bold colours and lively fabrics. The raftered living room is a beautiful space, with an open fireplace, big stylish sofas, family photos and a pale terracotta floor. Guido scoured Tuscany before finding the perfect inn, then renovated these two houses and filled them with fine antiques, delightful prints, candles and fun touches. There’s a library/bar where you can choose books in many languages and where Guido is generous with the grappa. The bedrooms, some with their own terraces, are in a separate building and have large beds, great bathrooms and whitewashed rafters, as was the custom here. The garden is pretty with roses, hydrangeas and vine and wisteria covered loggias, there are walks through the woods, and Guido is charming. Once settled in you’ll find it hard to stir… We loved it here.
