Divine views to San Gimignano, ‘simpatici’ owners, a magical feel - you’ll love this laid-back place, and Castellino is a 15-minute drive

Wine festivals, music festivals, sunsets galore: Tuscan heaven! After a stupendous drive along the road between Florence and Siena you descend, through dappled woodland, to Patrignone, high on a hill, with spectacular views. Simon and Verity, charismatic and open-hearted, live in the main farmhouse of a 15th-century cluster of buildings linked by flagstone courtyards and jasmine-strewn terraces. Paths lined with lavender lead to Verity's herb garden, while an 18th-century olive crusher stands witness to 30 hectares of olive groves; some trees are 250 years old, others are exceedingly rare. Each apartment feels nicely secluded. One is reached by outside steps and delights in its own balcony, another has an open fireplace, bliss on autumn days. The largest, Terrazza, is the oldest and, in summer, the coolest. Imagine stone walls and chunky beams, walnut veneer beds, painted cupboards and lovely old lace at windows. Then its off to the trampoline, treehouse and unfenced pool, or for a waggy walk in the woods with Lola and Charlie.

  • The beautiful walled-towns of San Donato in Poggio and Castellina in Chianti are just 10 minutes away. Both are home to a number of excellent restaurants, as well as supermarkets, cafés, shops and amazing gelaterias.
  • If you like to walk, we’re in the middle of some stunning countryside. And there is a mildly-taxing 3-hour walk (in total) from Patrignone to an abandoned 14th century castle hidden in the woods. And our dogs will be happy to escort you there and back!
  • Within 40 minutes you can reach some of the main Tuscan tourist spots: Florence, Siena, San Gimignano, Certaldo, Radda, Monteriggioni, Panzano, Greve, Castellina in Chianti and much more are all easy reach.
  • If you prefer not to share your Tuscan adventure with hordes of tourists, worry not. There are dozens of beautiful rarely visited spots within easy reach. Just ask us when you get here, and we’ll point you in the right direction.
  • If you like wine, then you’re in for a treat. As well as having one of the world’s top wineries, Iseole e Olena, as our closest neighbour, there are dozens of fabulous small growers just minutes away. We’d be happy to arrange personal visits for you.
  • We make our own 100% organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil here. You’ll be hard pushed to find a better oil elsewhere on this planet. If you’d like us to show you around, explain how we make our oil, and organise a tasting, we’d be delighted to help.

"A great place to stay in the centre of Tuscany. So easy to get to the main attractions of Sienna and Florence and a few less known jems. Some really good restaurants with the one 5 mins away one of the best. Accommodation was exactly what we wanted/needed which we would describe as rustic. Swimming pool is great as is the general outdoors, especially the views. Verity and Simon were very helpful and hospitable. The olive oil they produce is a must. We'll go back someday."

"Met all expectations. Tranquillity and a great place to relax. We stayed in Le Stalle which gave us the space we needed and was very comfortable. The small terrace was good to eat out on the warm evenings. Ideal location for exploring Tuscany. Fantastic restaurants and an opportunity to sample local wines. Simon, Verity, family and dogs were very welcoming and provided us with all the suggestions and recommendations we need. The only downside: we had to drive to the nearest restaurant which was very good. Had to plan ahead and have the last glass of wine on the patio admiring the views."

"We spent a blissful week as a family at Podere Patrignone enjoying the amazing views, walks in the woods with the dogs, the pool and Verity's wonderful cooking. La Terrazza is exquisitely furnished and deliciously cool, even during the hottest August on record. There is lots to explore in the local area including superb gelaterias and great restaurants. Although there are other families staying in other apartments, it never felt busy - plenty of room for everyone. And the views? Worth going just to see a perfect slice of Tuscan heaven."

"We stayed in La Stalle and simply loved it. Fantastic apartment with a lovely outdoor seating area for lazy lunches. Simon, Verity and family are perfect hosts, who go out of their way to make you feel at home. Verity's dinners are simply amazing. I can still taste the lemon linguine! And overall, just a really lovely property in the heart of the Chianti region - a great base for exploring but an equally wonderful place to do absolutely nothing!"

"Stunning views and landscape, wonderful hospitality - a home away from home and fantastic for the children too. We had a wonderful time and can't wait to come back!"
August 2013
"The location is perfect for exploring the Tuscan countryside. The views both of and from the place are magnificent. The accomodation is comfortable and well equipped (we stayed in Le Stalle and La Terazza). The facilities are great for families. The real highlight though was the fantastic hospitality from Simon and Verity. No request or query was left unresolved and they managed to be constantly available without ever being obtrusive. I should also mention that Verity's cooking is as good if not better than almost any restaurant in the area. The visit will certainly not be our last."

"We were a multi-generation 23-person gathering of family and friends, and Podere Patrignone fit our group's needs perfectly - plenty big enough for all of us but small enough that we could book the whole property for a week; rural but close to scenic towns and historic cities; an old (VERY old!) building nicely restored and decorated; a variety of lodging types – from self-catering apartments to the 7-bedroom main part of the villa, each bedroom with its own en-suite; long, beautiful views; good-size swimming pool; and friendly hosts who give guests as much help - or privacy - as they desire.
