Stride up the hill to the heart of Montepulciano, for breathtaking 360-degree views. Make for ‘Porta di Bacco Osteria Enoteca’ for amazing Italian wines and fine local gnocchi. Stroll around the noble Piazza Grande, almost untouched in 500 years.
The views from San Bartolomeo too will enchant you. Attached to the church are the apartments, one up, one down, with peaceful dining patios and deeply comfy interiors. Silence rules; the sunsets are marvellous. In the manicured park gardens, a magnificent secular oak has been nursed back to life.
This is the heart of wine country, steeped in beauty and history. Don’t miss Montalcino, 30km, rich in Renaissance treasures. Even closer are two World Heritage sites: the Renaissance town of Pienza, 14km, and the sacred chapel of the Madonna di Vitaleta, on the edge of San Quirico d’Orcia.
