Cats laze, sheep graze and you’ll be spellbound by the peace of this lush green valley. Italian Alberto and English Ely run this laid-back B&B, bordering Umbria and Tuscany, with great charm, and you’re spoilt for things to do: fantastic walking (with a guide if you wish), wine tasting, and Perugia, Montefalco and Assisi are all close. If you don’t want to stray far book onto one of Alberto’s cookery courses, throw yourself into the inviting saltwater pool, retreat from the midday sun to the shady terrace. Inside this 1800 thick stone-walled farmhouse – your hosts live on one side, guest rooms on the other – are large and comfortable rustic bedrooms (two have kitchenettes) with heaps of space to chill out. You get terracotta floors, big beams and gorgeous Busatti linens on excellent mattresses. Breakfast is a treat: breads, cakes, croissants, homemade jams from their own fruit trees and you shouldn’t miss dinner – Alberto serves up classic dishes with creative twists in his lively restaurant which is popular with locals too. A relaxed, unstuffy, sociable place to unwind.
