Impossible not to fall in love with the Slow life (hens, veg patch, beautiful dinners on request), high on a hill in Umbria with views

Set deep within wooded hills, pleasingly unsymmetrical and not over-restored, this beautiful honey-stone house feels like it's been here 500 years (it has). The chunky-beamed sitting room lies at its heart: a rose-coloured sofa piled high with cushions, a coffee table laden with books, every inch of white wall hung with paintings. Big bedrooms above have colourful rugs and family pieces, fresh-cut flowers on deep sills, Sicilian-tiled bathrooms with antique taps; climb the creaky staircase to the tower for views, and a roll-top bath next to the bed. In the cottage close by, charming English owner Jenny lives with her friendly dogs. She's a Cordon Bleu chef and wonderful dinners can be arranged, and cookery courses too – a year-round treat. The village is five minutes away (two supermarkets, two butchers, three bars, three banks, a baker), and the beautiful town of Cortona is a short drive. Outside: a billowing garden, a saltwater pool, young vines that roll down to the valley, a shady terrace with a centuries-old tree. Absorb the peace and unwind.

Local points of interest from

  • While cooking and eating good Italian food and lying by the swimming pool are the order of the day at Ca' di Gosto, guests will generally wish to make some day excursions during their stay.
  • Just twenty minutes away lies Cortona, the beautiful Etruscan hill town which has a rich Renaissance history and boasts many great restaurants and antique shops. It is also home to Fra Angelico's "Annunciation".
  • Arezzo, also nearby, is a historic and beautiful town. In addition to its monthly antique fair the Basilica di San Francesco is home to some of the best known frescoes of the town's most famous artist Piero della Francesco.
  • Other historic towns easily visited on a day trip including Perugia, Gubbio, Citta di Castello, Orvieto, Todi, Siena and Firenze. Lake Trasimeno is also very close.
  • Mercatale is the closest town to Cadigosto and is 4 kilometers from the house. Umbertide, our nearest town with a big weekly market, is twenty minutes away at the other end of the valley towards Gubbio, and Citta Di Castello.
