The Experience
Spectacular views and a beautifully-restored stone house await after the drive up to Civitella Benazzone. The tiny medieval village is perched on a hilltop framed by the Tiber Valley and distant mountains; admire the impressive panorama while you sunbathe in a pretty garden planted with fragrant lavender and jasmine. You’re blissfully far from the crowds in Perugia and Assisi here, but close enough to explore their historic churches and galleries before returning to your tranquil ‘casa’. Thick limestone walls, old stone arches and ancient chestnut beams create rustic charm throughout the house, but thoughtful owners Shelly and Gunilla have ensured that modern comforts are prioritised. There’s a cosy wood-burner for winter nights, luxurious memory foam mattresses with down duvets and Egyptian cotton linen on the beds, and a smart crimson kitchen with stylish granite worktops. Cosy bedrooms look out over the piazza and hills, while each of the two simple bathrooms has a terracotta-tiled shower. Stacks of books and DVDs will keep you entertained on rainy days and there are loungers outside where you can snooze or read when the sun is shining.

A lovely house well equipped and well located to visit all the towns of Umbria. We loved the fireplace on chilly evenings long with the well stocked video library. The recommendations for towns to visit and places to eat were very helpful. Don't miss Assisi, Gubbio, Perugia and Spello.

Lovely well equipped house. Enjoyed the comfy bedding and beautiful garden. Easy to get around to various places - we liked Gubbio, Lago Trasimeno Cortona and Assisi in particular. Recommended for a relaxing holiday

My wife and I stayed in this beautiful home on a couple of different visits to Italy. It is wonderful. The stone, brickwork and wood beams throughout make you feel like you are truly in an old Italian home. It was beautifully restored with a modern kitchen. The patio and garden area is great during the fall visit with fantastic views of the countryside. The property is in a little hilltop village out in the country so you definitely get the true Italian experience. If you are there during the Christmas holidays be sure to visit both Assissi and Gubio as they do the towns up really nicely

Wow. What a beautiful place! I didn't want to leave! We had a wonderful Christmas at Casa Allegria. The kitchen is so well stocked, we had no trouble cooking up a turkey and all the trimmings for our celebration. It really feels like home here. Perugia and Assissi are close by but the star of the show is the Italian countryside. It's so peaceful and quiet. And the patio/yard area is perfect for soaking it all in. I cannot wait to go back.

Local points of interest from Shelly Gerber
- Perugia, Assissi, Gubbio, Deruta are all less than 30 minutes drive. Visit the Basilica of Saint Francis in Assissi, the historic ceramic producing town of Deruta, explore the vibrant medieval centre of Perugia. A variety of day excursions await you.
- Buon Appetito!! Enjoy al fresco dining on our terrace next to the garden with gorgeous Umbrian countryside panorama in the distance. Whether a delicious breakfast and fresh Italian coffee or a barbeque dinner, you dine in a wonderful outdoor ambience.
- Take a walk! There are many and varied walks nearby or a short drive away. From a stroll along the Tiber River or a walk to the top of Monte Tezio at 3000' through tranquil forests to amazing 360 deg. summit views of Umbria and Tuscany in the distance.
- Restaurants, gelaterie, and more - We have compiled an extensive guest information book with many personal recommendations from ourselves and guests of local places to eat, to visit, where to find the best gelato (Italian ice cream), where to shop, etc.
- Visit Lake Trasimeno with its lakeside towns - only a 30-40 minute drive. You can also take a boat ride to one of the islands in the Lake. And from here it is not far to Cortona, Montepulciano or Siena in Tuscany..
- Get off the beaten track- explore some of the back roads for a real treat - stunning, ruggedly beautiful Umbrian countryside, the ever-changing light and colours, poppies in May, sunflowers in July, autumn vineyards, olive groves - a photographers dream.
